  1. I'm having problems using "easy-urpmi." Here's the terminal output I get: [tom@localhost ~]$ su Password: [root@localhost tom]# urpmi.removemedia -a unable to access hdlist file of "updates", medium ignored removing medium "update_source" removing medium "Installation CD1 (cdrom1)" removing medium "Installation CD2 (cdrom2)" removing medium "Installation CD3 (cdrom3)" removing medium "main" removing medium "contrib" removing medium "updates" found 0 headers in cache removing 0 obsolete headers in cache write config file [/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg] [root@localhost tom]# urpmi.addmedia --update updates ftp://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/Mandrak...5/main_updates/ with media_info/hdlist.cz added medium updates write config file [/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg] retrieving source hdlist (or synthesis) of "updates"... ftp://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/Mandrak..._info/hdlist.cz ...retrieving failed: curl: (9) FTP: access denied ...retrieving done examining hdlist file [/var/cache/urpmi/partial/hdlist.updates.cz] examining synthesis file [/var/cache/urpmi/partial/hdlist.updates.cz] unable to parse hdlist file of "updates" examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.updates.cz] problem reading synthesis file of medium "updates" found 0 headers in cache removing 0 obsolete headers in cache write config file [/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg] unable to update medium "updates" [root@localhost tom]# urpmi.addmedia main ftp://ftp.clinet.fi/pub/mirrors/Mandrake-...i586/media/main with media_info/hdlist.cz added medium main write config file [/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg] reconfiguring urpmi for media "main" computing md5sum of existing source hdlist (or synthesis) retrieving source hdlist (or synthesis) of "main"... ftp://ftp.clinet.fi/pub/mirrors/Mandrake-..._info/hdlist.cz 3% of 26.6M completed, ETA = 0:30:58, speed = 0 ^[[A 3% of 26.6M completed, ETA = 0:33:04, speed = 0^[[A 3% of 26.6M completed, ETA = 0:33:29, speed = 0^A 3% of 26.6M completed, ETA = 1:16:03, speed = 0 I can't get past this point.
  2. I've just installed Mandriva 2005 LE and all went well. When I started looking for the software packages I noticed that the system only looked for rpm packages located on the installation CDs. I'd like to locate the Internet repositories where more and more-up-to-date packages are located. I need to be educated about Mandriva resources. Your help will definitely be appreciated! 3. Updated with easyurpmi. Printer still won't print. Some things noted during verbose start-up: In the start-up sequence it says: initializing USB controller (uhci-hcd): initializing USB controller (ehci-hcd): Mount USB file system Loading USB file system This sequence was followed by [OK} Later in the start-up sequence it says: starting dkms: nvidia(7174):Installing mode .....(bad exit status:5) Installation failed! Checking for new hardware At this point the installation halts - the computer keeps running but nothing happens. If I reboot, the next time it will usuallly get past this poiint and successfully load. My frustration level is pretty high right now. Maybe i should give up and find a different installation disk.
  4. I've never done a patch before. As a newbie, I know what they are but I don't know where to find one and I've never installed one. I'll need some help on this
  5. That didn't work. Same results as before. It says that the printer is connected to a parallel port and is working, but it isn't. It won't print. I have a spare Lexmark Z515 printer so I put it in. Same results. It prints in Windoows XP but not in Mandriva Linux.
  6. Nothing different! First I booted into Windows XP and tested the printer. It worked. Then I booted up Mandriva and went to the set-up wizard. It didn't connect the printer. Then, I closed the wizard, unplugged the printer cable, and plugged it into a different USB port. Then I restarted the wizard again with the same negative result. One thing I've noted but don't understand: When I first enter the wizard, it says that it auto-detected a printer at parallel port #0 (/dev/lp0), but it hasn't. If I accept that anyway and proceed to set up the printer, it won't print.
  7. Going to "localhost:631" gave me several printers to choose from, but not my Canon S300, although several of the other Canon drivers would probably work. However, the printer wasn't detected. When I tried to set up the printer, it would show up as Disabled. The procedure gave me the option to Enable it, but that didn't work. It wouldn't print a test page and back on the setup window it showed the printer to be still Disabled.
  8. One of the things that puzzled me when I installed Mandriva was that a substantion number of files failed to install. Most were related to i586. However, the program installed and runs. I've actually installed the program twice. The first time I screwed up the installation and it wouldn't boot up. I've also run the update feature about three times and this allowed me to get some things working that didn't the first time. However, it doesn't help me with the printer. It tells me to proceed with the installation and then install the printer from configuration, as we've been trying to do.
  9. I turned the Plug and Play OS off (from "yes" to "no") in the BIOS. Then booted up and went into Configure Your Computer. Found that HardDrake was running but hotplug was not. I turned it on. However, printer configuration Wizard still couldn't detect my printer. I had the same problem with sdan's recommendations. Going to "localhost:631" gave me several printers to choose from, but not my Canon S300, although several of the other Canon drivers would probably work. However, the printer wasn't detected. Now what? Thanks!!
  10. My printer is a Canon S300. The setup Wizard lets me select my printer and Canon S300 is an option (which, of course, I selected). I'm trying to get Mandriva 2005 LE installed. My copy is on a DVD. Sorry, but I don't know what "hotplug" is, so it's probably not installed. I certainly didn't install it intentionally.
  11. When I try to set up my printer with the Configuration Wizard it can't detect my printer which is connected via a USB port (yes, the printer's on). I've tried to install it manually by selecting one of the three USB ports available in the set-up procedure, but it won't connect to any of them. When I go through the procedure, it seems to set up the printer but won't print a test page. I then choose Enable Printer and it returns the message that the printer is Enabled. However, when I get back to the initial installation window, it shows that the printer I just tried to install is Disabled. What to do?
  12. Now that I've got Mandriva up and running, I'm trying to install peripherals such as printers and scanners. When I try, I'm asked to insert the Installation DVD and a drive opens. However, it's the wrong drive. It opens the CD-RW drive and it won't read the DVD. Any suggestions on how to get around this problem?
  13. Thanks for the advice. I reinstalled Mandriva today and it worked, sort of However, near the end of the installation the program gave me lots of grief about the video card (or its driver, I forget which because I'm not knowledgeable about them). It gave me a long list of options from which to pick. I didn't recognize any of them. It insisted I pick one so I picked one at random. It rejected that one. I went in that loop for a while and then went back and managed to get around the problem. When finished installing, I rebooted and Mandriva loaded in text mode (no GUI). I logged in correctly and got a command line. I entered startx and got: execve failed for /etc/x(errno 2) giving up xinit: Connection refused (errno 111) unable to connect to X server xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error What should I do now?
