Removing the three lines associated with these shares has removed them from the Desktop, great.

they still show up in /mnt which isn't a big problem although i would like to get rid of the pointer to a share that doesn't exist. if i drag it to the wastebin it goes and then comes back

any ideas?

I think there's more to it than that. If you hover the mouse over them they report as unmounted samba shares and if i look in /mnt they are there as well even though one of the shares have been removed.

There is no option to delete or move to wastebin, if i drag them to the waste bin i get permissions denied!

If i become root in konsole the links are not visible nor are they visible in root mode krusader.

How would i change the permissions to allow me to delete them?

Hi all

I have Samba installed and is now working fine. In configuring samba and experimenting with settings in mount points, i checked the "allow ordinary users to mount the file system" which also checks the nosuid box.

Having done that a Remote share link was placed on the Desktop. Reversing this action leaves the link in place, even removing the share doesn't get rid of it.

Could someone kindly tell me how to remove them?

I'm looking for a prog that will wipe the free space on a drive\partition. One with a gui would be preferable.

Any recommendations? Darik's Boot and Nuke seems a little over the top for my purposes (humour).

I've tried on quite a quite a few sites now and it works fine for my purposes, if i should feel the need for more, i'll try and build it myself as Scarecrow suggests but at the moment its not broke enough to fix it.

I only appear to have 2 of those

which i have symlinked to their respective directories, and it seems to work fine. Although it gets a bit flakey if you try to shut the tab with the video playing. Stopping the video first and then closing seems to work ok.

Don't know what happened to all the other files, can't find them anywhere!!

done that. installed mplayerplugin, rebooted to be sure but still get rubbish about missing plugin.

Is there something else i need to do,

Forget to mention my firefox is not the default installed with mdv, its 1.5 in its own directory. Thinking about it, i probably need to set up a manual symbolic link to the plugin. Is that correct?

Where would i find the plugin to link to it. I'm assuming its something like mplayerplugin.so?

Yes i have all those installed and the win32 codecs. How do i view a WMP video. In firefox i get "plugin required to view contents" or something similar.

Can't see how to do it with Mplayer.

Several sites i use only supply their video streams for WMP. If i installed WMP and used wine\ open office it seems from what i read that it would run ok. If it did run ok, how would i configure firefox to associate online WMP streams with my local WMP installation? Is it possible?

Don't have windows, been there, done that. no thankyou.

Thought i'd just say i got the job done with this info from the avidemux forum.

File -> Open... and choose AVI, then Auto -> VCD(Mpeg-1) or SVCD/DVD(Mpeg-2) and then File -> Save -> Save Video

(you can also change video options if SVCD/DVD is chosen)

 

Worked great, hope this may be of help to someone else. Easy when you know how.

i have no idea what most of that means, but i get the idea. Basically i have a downloaded .avi file which i want to view on an .mpg only player, hence convert it to .mpg format.

i thought it would be easy, i should have known better!

OK i got avidemux installed, some help on how to use it would be good. looked around the homepage, forums, google and can't find what i want to do.

I open a file called xxxx.avi and i want to convert it to xxxx.mpg how do i go about it. Doesn't seem very clear to me at all.

well, tried that and got a load of errors, files don't exist, and then it started downloading FF 102 so i stopped it. Think i'll leave that alone now and try something else.

i got 1.5 as an rpm from pbone if i remember correctly. its running quite nicely out of a folder in my user home directory so i think i'll leave it alone and look for something else. i've screwed things up before and have learned to be wary.

just out of curiosity, why would a video converter want to install a web browser anyway??

just did urpmi and it wants to install dependencies, which is ok but one of them is firefox 102. i already dumped that and installed firefox 1.5. Will that cause a problem?

made a test user and all seems to be as it should, iget access denied for the jumpdrive but that's probably a permissions thing

I've noticed a couple of other things which may help point the finger of fate. In Konqueror if i open a folder it always opens in a new window no matter what the settings are. Also i can't keep icon view, i can change to it but it always reverts back to list view. This is also fine as a new user.

Just recently started to have this problem where all my removable devices (cd rom, sd card reader, Lexar jumpdrive) when clicked on come up with this error message "KIOExec ERROR retrieving data from devices is not supported". All can be accessed through /mnt.

I found a few similar problems searching the forums but not any real answers.

Has anybody got an idea what the problem is and how to solve it?

I'm running 10.2 2005 LE.

Hi John,

I had the problem of not being able to see my xp workgroup in smb4k and found it to be the personal firewall under Security in MCC. Through tinkering i found that if i didn't have "everything allowed" i was unable to see the windows workgroup.

Hope this helps although it probably won't as i'm very dim with all things Linux.
