  1. I did select the generic FX which was the only FX available. only changed the resolution in kde. btw: my motherboard is = Compact Presario 711ous 470016-083 can I assume that other things can be changed inside kde with configure my computer?? Or should I just leave everything alone?
  2. shrug.. at least I am getting good at installing LE 2005. even if i can't change anything. new install tomorrow. thx
  3. no. only thing i changed was the resolution of the monitor. from 1600x1200 to 1280x1024 74gh or whatever ity is for screen refresh
  4. video card = NIVIDA Geforce FX 5200 motherboard = ?? I don't think I have ever looked up anywhere what it is. Where might I find it without looking inside.
  5. not happening. did kde at prompt after typing login. stuff started on console screen. mostly about Xorg. ended with 'fatal server error: no screens available. said to check /var/log/Xorg.0.log but since I can not get into linlux I think that is not possible. I can't believe we are not allowed to change configurations like screen resolution. I am off for a bit. Need to clear head and decide if I really want to re-install again. thx Kristi for trying to help.
  6. I will do that as soon as I can get back in linux. sigh I changed my monitor resolution while I was waiting for the hardware guru's and then re-booted as requested. I now find myself right back to the problem stated a ways above concerning the boot taking me right into a console, asking for login(which I do) and then this : [username@70-33-9-215~]$_ nothing works after that. warm boot, cold boot, makes no difference. I really don't want to re-install again. Am I not allowed to change config things like monitor resolution? I am very disappointed. I thought I had it set. The mouse problem was a small problem but this is big.
  7. I'm guessing that would always work since that is basically what I am adoing when I manually shutdown from botched linux. However, I would like to see if I can fix some other way. I am posting this question on hardware forum also to see if the hardware guru's can come up with something. If all else fails I can certainly do as you suggest. Just a pain to do it that way. Especially when I could go back and forth between windows and linux with no problem in 9.2 version. Of course there were other problems so maybe it tradeoff I must accept.
  8. here is the situation. If I boot straight into linux all is good. My wireless 3 button mouse with wheel works great. However, if i then re-boot into windows to do something, then back into linux the mouse goes bonkers. I can not place it on any point to click. It just bounces from top to bottom. only recourse is to manually shut off computer and re-boot straight into windows. anyone have ideas on why and how to fix this? [moved from Tips & Tricks by spinynorman]
  9. that makes no sense. If it works in the first case but not in the second case there must be something that linux is not getting on re-boot back from windows. Getting a new mouse does not sound like the solution. At least not to me atm.
  10. ok, not altogether fine. here is the situation.
  11. Woot!! I re-installed LE2005 and this time did not choose the auto login. lol. all works fine so far. will not have much time to play till later. thx for all the help so far. will probably have many more questions before it is over.
  12. nope. did not work. first one said no display configured and second one said something about not found.. maybe boot with the cd again and do repair??? i think there was an option for that. not sure though. really need to get rid of the autologon for username and go right into kde. don't know how to do that though. since i am at command line maybe there is a way from there. shrug.
  13. ok.. almost perfect. I apparently chose a not so good option, for me at least. When it asked me if I wanted it to automatically logon my user I saaid yes. not good as it does automatically log me on but in console mode. I get thei: username@70-33-9-251]$_ and it sets waiting for me to do something, who knows what. lol the install went great and i got my hd2 partitioned into 3 partitions: / /home /win_c2 (which is supposed to be fat32. haven't tried it yet since i can't get in) /root is 5.9 gig /home is 10gig /win_32 is 10gig all rest of 120 gig free. any help on getting in and changing the automatic login to colsole would be very much appreciated. 2005 version looks great although I now need to learn the location of all stuff like configure etc again.. 9.2 was WAY different.
  14. ok..I will just install the new ones and hope for the best.. I am sure linux is very much like windows BUT it is enough different that all things do not work the same. anyway I have you people to help me recover if necessary. will let you know in a bit.
  15. soooo...just to be sure. can you give me the steps for removing all the partitions now? Reverting back to a pristine second HD? then I assume I only need to re-boot with the new mandrake distro and follow on screen instructions??? sorry again for all the questions and tentiveness. I have screwed up too many times already with the linux stuff. my ego from lots of windows years is somewhat beaten down. lol thx for any and all help.
  16. if I delete the linux partitions, which I am inclined to do, I will need to repair my mbr, correct? when i deleted simply MEPIS my system would not boot till I repaired MBR with xp install cd. Not sure if this is what you mean by scrap though. edit: i almost have all 3 cd's dl'd. am on the last one now. they are all over 700 MB though. i am not sure i can burn a cd image since my cd's are 700MB in size. Can I even get larger CD's? have not seen any but not really looked either so not sure.
  17. ok I will try to figure out how to update to 205....which version? or is it the final release? is it free or will it cost me?
  18. here is what info my 7tools Partition manager gives. It also will not allow me to change anything. hd0 windows on primary drive didn't copy this stuff hd1 primary ext3 5.9GB 1.2GB used used active extended --- 106GB ----- not active logical swap2 494MB 4k used not active logical invalid 105GB 2.1GB used not active this is how mandrake 9.2 set up the second drive. I don't seem able to resize the 105GB partition or the 106gb one..they are part of same. shrug.
  19. solarian, what version of mandrake are you using? the reason I ask is that, as stated before, I am using 9.2. when I follow your instructions I do not get an opportunity to create or resize my home partition. I have a small / partition (5gig) and a very large home (105gig). this is the way 9.2 did it on my install. I don't seem to be able to resize the home either from linux or using my 7tools PM form windows. I am at a lost, again. sigh
  20. yes I knew about needing a fat32 partition. can I make one from linlux? then put files into this partition and see them from windows? that was my orginal question, or it was what i meant anyway. lol if i can make a fat32 from mandrake, how?
  21. while I am waiting for Kristi on the mouse question, here is another. I want to be able to see my linux files from windows and visa versa. I just dl'd the windows md5.exe from linux so it is in my hole/largegroh folder. I want to be able to go into windows and 'see' it so I can move it to a windows folder or maybe just use it from windows. at the moment i can not see any of my linux stuff from windows. all windows is on hd1 in NTFS and all linux is on hd2 in fat32 (i assume) all was set up with my mandrake 9.2 install. Hopefully some of this makes sense to someone.
  22. logitech, wireles10s, 3 button plus wheel (also works like button)
  23. thx Kristi. Yes all have been patient and helpful. as I have only had mandrake, or linux for that matter, up for less than a week there will be many more questions. lol I was able to do all of what you posted except the internet/browser one. I have yet to find that one. I am using 9.2 so that is probably the problem.. some of your other things for me to do were not found in same place either.. reason for 9.2 is someone somewhere said there was a mouse problem with current version so I avoided it. Internet-browser must be somewhere on 9.2 but I have not been able to find it yet. as to the firefoxold folder.. i can now delete this one, correct?
  24. ok. found it. now i have 2 copies. one in usr/share and one in home/largegroh/firefox/firefox-installer. i assume i should get rid of one of them. also can not seem to get the big icon for firefox to work wither. have the little wheel thing for link atm and it works but looks goofy. smile. see how quick we newbies get picky. lol :D edit: oh if i need to get rid of one of the installs... how please? edit again: appears that the one in usr/share does not work. won't come up when clicked.. trying other one again..this may decide which to get rid of for me. now the how though... edit 3rd time: ok both do work. I would like, i think, to have foxfire in usr share since, i again think, that it would be available to other distros if and when i get them installed. so directions on how to get rid of the /home/largegroh/etc one would be great.
