  1. It was installed as a LAN card. The live distribution worked instantly as soon as I pointed to the right PCMCIA driver. I will reinstall and see if it is any different. Thank's for your help
  2. Ian, Firefox gives 2KB/s My desktop 118KB/s I think the fact that I did not tick the internet group left some files out of the installations. Is that a possible??????
  3. Ian, I run Internet under 10.1 for moths but at that time I didn't have ADSL. Secondly, yesterday, as you can see above I runned Puppy Live 1.07 and have full speed same as for my desktop. So, the problem is related to this install only
  4. Oh..shit. If firefox is not included in the CD I cannot get it because with my speed it will take ages.
  5. Thanks Ian, Yes I found it then I ticked Force No Local APIC and same for Force No APIC After reboot I go there again and Force No APIC was not available for untick. Why is that?????? But Sorry, not better Internet speed I will try Firefox and see if this is better but I tend to believe that a reinstall is better I will try after I have tried Firefox. Any comment Ian????
  6. Hello Ian, alias net-pf-10 off do not help mcc service doesn't have any apic or local apic only acpi, acpid. Am I looking at the wrong place, Ian????? Can you please tell how I do this: You don't have to do that every time, just preload the "yenta_socket" module manually every time your system starts (you know how, don't you?).
  7. It's no big deal to reinstall 2006 and ad internet program group. Otherwise it would be to search for a needle in a haystack. I dont understand why this installation did not add the neccesary files a s long as I picked Opera.
  8. scarecrow, Yes before I did modprobe yenta_socket and udevstart I had no eth0 After I checked with lsmod and all OK To be frank, NO I don't know I startet the browser and measured the speed to less than 1KB/s. This means Yenta_socket made eth0 up and go (thank's to you) but had no effect on the speed. So it must be more missing.
  9. Thanks for reply scarecrow, Yes I use this PCMCIA urpmi gives: No package named yenta_socket urpmf yenta_socket list all kernels with yenta_socket.ko.gz Meaning I have to install it from this? Gosh....I have never done this before. Is it another easier way?
  10. Hello Guys, I am happy to report that the problem can be simplified. I run Puppy Live Mozilla v. 1.07 and Mozilla v.1.8b1.5 run Internet at the same speed as the desktop. This means the router and the switch and the kable's work perfectly. The problem can thereby be concentrated to the bar bone 2006 installation on the notebook. Some files is missing in this installation and I believe this or these files is from the Internet group of software which I didn't choose. The question is what file(s) is it???????????????????????? Can anyone point that out for me????????????????

Hello sjaglin@yahoo.co.uk, I run mdv 2006.0 Power pack and "gkrellm" is included in the pack. Try it, it's nice. This forum have a Howto "configuring mandriva" written by "aRTee"
  12. I forgot to say both firewall's is turned off
  13. Reporting back. Installation vent smoothly and it looks god and it loads faster than 10.1. I have 2 problems: The first is very sensitive mouse which is difficult to control. I consider this a minor problem. The second concerns a very slow Internet speed, around 1.5 kb/sec but often slower. This is a major problem. I have installed a Ethernet wired switch as follows: ADSL Router----->Switch(new)-------->Desktop 2006 in dual boot with XP |->Notebook with 2006 bar bone with ICE-WM ADSL Router is Aztech DSL305EU Switch is is SURECOM EP-805SX-C - 5 port Both nic's works OK run several months on a crossover Ethernet cable. The desktop runs as speedy as before (1MB Adsl), but the notebook is unacceptable slow When I picked the software, under installation of 2006 on the notebook, I did not tick the Internet group and I go to "individual....." and picked Opera since this is the only browser/mail I use. I am wondering if the notebook lack some software since I did not tick the Internet group?????? I must admit Wired LAN is quite new to me and the router manual do not explain much about if I need to change some settings in the router. I think it's no need to do anything since it is a router. I have tried change the cables but it doesn't change anything. Both computers are setup using LAN and DCHP server. I cannot ping so it seems like the 2 computers is not connected. I don't know what to do next except start reinstall on both computers and that is not nice after all the customizing I have done on the desktop. When installed 2006 on the desktop I didn't choose the Server software group. After I have added many server software packages, perhaps to many or to few. Any tip/direction on what to do??????????????????
  14. Thank's Ian, Since I need Lan client for wired and wireless internet connection and file and printer sharing. I will add this group since I don't know what software is neded. You are right I can use urpmi after and download. Abiword must be fetched from 'contrib' anyway Spacewise this is no problem bearing in mind that my present set up is 10.1 and around 2GB used of system partition. I am happy and relaxed thank's to you and I will do this first thing tomorrow, since local time is 9PM and my wife demand some attention and I am happy to attend to it. I will post back
  15. Ian, Thank you. You are very helpfull. Your reply trigger a few questions: Can you in 2006PP choose ICE-WM from the program group, down to the right, under KDE and Gnome??? Let say I follow the same as mini but do it a normal installation. I dont choose the internet group but then I go to detail picking i.e. Opera and in the office group which I dont choose either and in detail I pick i.e gnumeric is that possible whitout all the other stuff in this groups which mandriva have choosen as default??????? Ah.. this is a horible sentence. Please tell me if you don't understand and I will try again. I feel comfortable in both Cli and MCC but sometimes mcc kan be faster and more conveniant. Further more I dont intend to use Open office my notebook is to slow. Abiword and Gnumeric is all I need. Then around 500MB + software I choose in addition ca easily be handlet within 4 GB. If you can confirm positively the 2 questions I tend to chose the normal installation.
  16. What speed do you have on download normally Ian. I have a one megabite line and when I am lucky I get above 100 KB/sec
  17. ian, Thank's it would be fantastic if you can do that. You can see it at the bottom of my replies. Please tell me if its not shown HDD 4GB Partition 800Mb home 512 MB Swapfile the rest for system files I would for sure like to have a GUI. I dont know which of the small one have a clean and logic GUI and fast and small as well. I know this is impossible but if you believe in dreams... You know what I mean. I am exited to hear what you get. Thank's again
  18. jhp, Thank's for the tip. I will investigate it. So far I found the Belkin F5D6020 version 1 is based on 2x00 chipset and version 2 is based on the atml chipset. The atml version is a lot of work for a newbie like me.
  19. ianw1974, Thank's for reply. I can see that a mini installation can be done with i.e from 2006 Power pack which I have. My problem doing that is all the depencies which I don't know belong to who so when chosing the software during installation I will get lost and further more I belive am only offered KDE and/or Gnome as the Gui. There is a light one called "Iw....". And maybe it's other options as well. So, how do you do it???????
  20. Hello Guys, I am running mdv 10.1 with KDE on my old thinkpad but it is slow. I like to give this notebook a shot in arm by using a light GUI and limited number of software like: Abiword, Gnumeric, Opera, Krusader, audio, wired and wireless pscmcia card as a LAN client, Skype, USB and gkrellm and little els. I want to use this notebook to sit out in the garden sometimes and play. I am retired so this is just for fun. I have downloaded booth 2005LE mini and 2006 mini and my questions are: Which one demand less of the notebook??????? I am looking for big differences. What light GUI does this to give????????????? Where can I find info on what software is available????? included in the 2 downloads Can I update using urpmi with mirror sites just as for 10.1 and 2006PP ?????????? Is the installation similar to the full fledged mdv distros???????? Spec for the notebook is below I am looking for general advice, please.
  21. jhp That was a beutifull HOWTO. Thanks fir the tip. This quote from google is not very inspiring. I think I will look for another card since this card "v2" using the Marvel chip. My problem is there isn't much to choose from here where I live I look forward to your progress.
  22. jhp, Strange since I am looking for the same as you and would like to avoid ndiswrapper just as you. I found the netgear WG511 v2 in a shop today and I am wondering if anybody get it to work. There must be since the compability means someone has made it to work. I have just got 1 MB ADSL and use Aztech router (DSL305EU). I am in process of buying a SWITCH and a Wireless LAN access point and a pcmcia wireless LAN card for my notebook.. Lets hope someone are coming forward with their experience. I will follow future replies with interest.
  23. Hello jhp, If you llok at Mandriva hardware compability list You will find wireless nic certified by mdv for 2006.0 I can not determine if it is pcmcia card because it's not mentioned in the list. Hope it helps
  24. Hello spinynorman, Thanks for reply. Yes, I am aware of that but trying give this error message: I cannot find it in my installation. Any tip what to do where to go??????????
