  1. Ok...now my issue.

    First, I had another, unrelated kernel problem but I got that fixed. Now I have a KDE problem, I think I know what might fix it, but I want to check first.

    Here's the deal: nothing works. My desktop settings weren't saved, so my side panels are gone (see my latest KDE screenshots at http://www.liquidzoo.net to know what I mean). This, I believe, is caused by the fact that the kicker panels are now simply called panels, instead of Child Panels like they were in 3.3 and 3.2. Something changed in the later versions of 3.3.2 because even saving the desktop settings doesn't work. I have 2 fully transparent Eterms that do not start correctly (buttonbar and scrollbar are visible).

    I *think* that I can solve these issues by logging out, moving my ~/.kde folder and logging in again. I'll try it when I get home from work (unless someone else has another suggestion) but I do have another question: I was under the impression that 3.4 had the option to start another KDE session (like the XP Switch User option) so I could leave my desktop up and have my fiancee log into hers. I can't find this option anywhere, though. Anyone know?

  2. One, thing, you definitely dont have to reinstall. If its not getting to press I for interactive mode, then its a kernel issue.

    All you need to do, is boot knoppix, and via chroot, install any kernel, may as well get the one off the most recent 10.2 cds, but anything from 10.1's kernel would be fine.

    Install it, and add it to your lilo/grub. That should get you into your system again. If that doesnt work, please get the last few lines of output before the computer hangs.

    Enabling Alsa 1.0.6: emu10k1 [OK]

    Then a blinking cursor. I don't ever remove a previous kernel until I know that the new one will work. This time, it didn't work.

  3. Ok...

    I run cooker. Have for at least a year (can't honestly remember when I started). I know that cooker is unstable but...

    I ran a urpmi --auto-select recently, then installed kde 3.4 from thac's rpms. Normally that wouldn't be a problem, but I messed something up I think.

    I rebooted to get all the new settings to take affect (first bad move, I guess). Reboot hung on Alsa (known bug in the new version of Alsa, but I didn't find that out till later). Booted into Knoppix cause nothing else worked for me, uninstalled Alsa and reinstalled it thinking that would fix my problem. It didn't. When I was reinstalling, it wanted kernel 2.6.11-2mdk, so I installed that too (as well as the kernel source), now I have a way more interesting problem.

    Booting to my default lilo entry or to the created 2.6.11-2 entry causes an immediate hang. It never gets to the 'Press Esc for verbose mode' part of the lilo boot, and my usb (wireless) keyboard never initializes. Booting to 2.6.8.1-20 causes the same hang in Alsa.

    Anyone know how I can fix this with the 2.6.11-2mdk kernel? Failing that, anyone know where I can get the kernel source rpm for 2.6.8.1-20mdk? If I could get that, I think I could at least get my machine to boot. I really don't want to reinstall, but I know I may have to and I am currently downloading the most recent 10.2 isos just in case.

    Can anyone please help me?

  4. Actually...it will.

    I believe the default icon location for gnome in Mandrake is /usr/share/icons

    This is not where new icon themes go, but we'll get to that.

    Open up nautilus and navigate to that folder. Look in the folder of the icon theme you currently have installed. Look for the star icon and take note of what the name of it is.

    Now, if you have your own icon themes installed, they will be in ~/.icons Find an icon that you want to use for the Gnome menu and change the name of that icon to the name of the star icon. You may have to remove and re-apply your icon theme, or restart Gnome, for the changes to take affect.

  5. I assume it's this part that is having the problem:

    image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8.1-10mdk
    label="2681-10"
    root=/dev/hda1
    initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.8.1-10mdk.img
    append="devfs=nomount acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda5 splash=silent"
    vga=788
    read-only

    right?

    Do this for me. Open a terminal and type: ls-la /boot

    Copy and paste the output in here (to copy and paste, highlight with your mouse to copy, click on your mouse button to paste)

  6. I have no idea...

    I am in the middle of updating 390 different things on my cooker system, so we'll see if that helps. I'm also going to install gdm and see if that helps at all. Going to have to wait until tomorrow to try it out, though. I'm at work right now until 3 in the morning, then I have to be up at about 8...

  7. Completely possible

    Let me see if I understand what you're trying to do:

    Download the updates from one of the mirrors, create your own hdlists (IE: so they could be used from your dvd) then burn them to cd or dvd to distribute around.

    Am I right?

    If so, piece of cake, really.

    Download the mirror contents to a specific folder (example I will use: /home/user/updates)

    After they are all downloaded, open a terminal (kterm, eterm, gnome-terminal, etc.), su to root (type: su <enter> <enter your root password> <enter> ) and type: genhdlist /home/user/updates (replacing with your folder location).

    That will go through and produce both the hdlist.cz and the synthesis.hdlist.cz for your folder full of rpms. Doesn't have to be the contents of a mirror, could be any mandrake rpm that you want to use. After you're done, you can burn the folder to a cd or dvd. The syntax to add the cd as a media source would be:

    urpmi.addmedia medianame file:///mnt/cdrom/updates with hdlist.cz

  8. IIRC, there was an initial bug in MandrakeUpdate in 10.1.

    urpmi rpmdrake

    Install that (and it's dependencies) then try to run the graphical MandrakeUpdate again. That should work for you.

    This is, of course, dependant on you having an Update source installed (via easyurpmi)

  9. There are other programs that you can use for an email checker. If you're a KDE user, I'm sure superkaramba has some themes that will do it, I know gdesklets has at least 1, and there's always gkrellm.

    As for the links to start programs, can you give us an example? It would be really helpful if we had an idea of what you are looking for before we spout off 100 different ideas that aren't even close to what you want.

  10. I knew how to do it via cli. I have logged in using cli for years, but this is the first time I have run into this problem (mainly due to the fact that this is the first time I have used a dm since 7.2)

    startx works just fine, but as I said; that's probably too much for her. She has said she will use Linux as long as I make it easy for her to use, hence the dm for logging in.

    I did not know that about KDE 3.4. That's good to know. Too bad 3.4 isn't out yet (even in cooker, I looked). Anyone know of anything I could do in the meantime?

  11. I'm moving from a single user (plus root) system to a 2 user system. My fiancée would be way too confused logging in via cli so I'm trying to set up a dm. Here's what happens:

    mdkkdm: starts fine, when I click on the user and enter the password, mdkkdm restarts. No desktop.

    kdm: Same thing

    xdm: Haven't tried cause it's not as user friendly as either of the kdm options or gdm.

    gdm: Not installed, but I will install it and try it when I get internet tomorrow.

    So...any ideas? Why does the dm restart and I never get a desktop?

    Another question: Is there something that would resemble the 'Switch User' option that XP has? That way I wouldn't have to close my desktop for her to log in.

  12. Try running lsmod in a terminal as root

    If you don't see the entry sata_via then edit your /etc/modprobe.preload file (again as root) and add it at the end.

    For what it's worth, you're getting better speed from your sata drive than I am from mine. I cannot compare it with Windows, cause my XP installation has no access to that drive.

  13. I agree with you there, if a 4th cd is made available, they will be on there. I have the powerpack, so I know they are included there.

    Historically, there has not been a 4th cd offered for public download. This cd has only been offered for club members. But most of the packages that are included on the 4th cd usually end up in a 'main' urpmi source shortly after the download edition is released to the public.

    So...in short; LTD602: If you wait a bit, kde 3.3(.1) rpms will be available for you from somewhere. We're just not too sure where they will be ATM.

  14. KDE 3.3 is included with 10.1 offcial download (look at 4th CD)...

    Since 10.1 OE is still only available to club members we have no way of verifying that there will be a 4th cd made available to the public (and as such, any links to a 4th cd will be removed until it is verified), but looking at the 10.1 mirror (proxad and carroll) the only kdebase file that is there is kdebase-3.2.3-128mdk which says to me that it will not be offered as a general download.
