  1. I install all my games in ~/games by default. It's just the biggest partition I have, so it seems logical to me; but everything works just fine for me. I'm not sure why it's not working for you.

I would suggest going through DOlson's tutorial for your install of Uplink. Just substitute /usr/local/* with your directory of choice for your install. That should work for you just fine.

  2. Has anyone installed Mandtake 9.1 with a USB keyboard? I know that the keyboard itself will work, but I'm wondering if it will work in the installer. My keyboard didn't work in the install of 9.0, had to dig out an old ps/2 keyboard for the install; but I've since gotten rid of that keyboard and I want to upgrade to 9.1. Just wondering if anyone has any feedback on this. Thanks

  3. From the Nvidia website:

    STEP 4: Install

Type "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4363.run" to install the driver.

See the README (text | PDF) for more detailed instructions. If you have any questions or problems, please check the linux discussion forum. If you don't find an answer to your question there, you can send email to linux-bugs@nvidia.com.

  4. This game has been out for about a month and a half here in the US, longer in the UK; but it's worth mentioning.

The game I'm referring to is Uplink: Hacker Elite (in the UK, I think it's just Uplink). You can get the demo here: http://www.introversion.co.uk/uplink/

There's a linux version of the demo, and full linux version included on the cd. I bought it today. It's a pretty great game, though not as graphical as most games out now are, but it's a lot of fun. Check it out.

  5. This is probably an easy question, but I can't seem to figure it out, so here goes:

I want to know how to burn a .iso image to a cd. I can't seem to figure it out, and I don't want to coaster all of my blanks trying. I am using Gnome-Toaster if that helps. I would like to use k3b, but I can't get it to burn on my system, keeps saying it can't recognize my burner.

Anyway, easy question, but I needed to ask it. Thanks.

  6. Doesn't seem to be working on my 8200 with MDK 9.

Another question related to the resolution problem, though. If I leave my laptop long enough for the screensaver to come on, it seems to screw up the resolution. My only option is to log out and back in again. I would like for it not to do this at all, but I'm not sure how I would go about doing so. Would it have something to do with my choice of monitor? (I chose Generic Flat Panel 1400x1050)

  7. Ok, now I am having an issue with my laptop. Maybe someone can help me out.

I want to be able to close the lid and have it suspend. I know it is set to do so in the bios so I figured I would give it a try.

The first time I tried it from within KDE. When I opened the lid, all I got was a garbled screen. I couldn't see anything. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace didn't do anything, I had to hard reboot the machine to get it back. Then I tried locking the screen, so that it was basically off before I closed the lid. This time I didn't get the garbled screen, but when I woke it up, the resolution was all messed up. It almost looked like it was trying to put my screen on a monitor that is 4 times the size that it is.

The last thing I tried was closing the lid from the command prompt. This seems to work just fine. I woke it back up and everything was just fine.

I don't want to have to log out of KDE each time I want to take my laptop anywhere, I would like it to just suspend when I close the lid; baring that, I would like it to not screwq with the resolution when I lock the screen and reopen it. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do about this?

Totally unrelated to this issue, but I also have another thing that is annoying me. When I start KDE I have 2 copies of gkrellm running. One where I want it to be, and the other on the top left hand side of the screen. The one I want there has the theme on it, the other does not. Does anyone know how I can make it so only one copy of gkrellm starts each time I boot my computer up? Also, this is only happening on my laptop. I have no problems like this on my desktop.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone has.

  8. It seems like the ~/.kde2 dir appeared after I upgraded Open Office.org. That's just my guess since the only thing in that folder is Icons for OO.

I seem to remember seeing a post for deleting the ~/.kde and ~/.kde2 directories when upgrading to rc5. I could be wrong, but I don't want to mess this up since this is the first time I have done anything like this.

Do I have to download all the files? Can I urpmi it from the command prompt and have it work without downloading the files? I was just curious.

  9. Question:

If I want to upgrade to 3.1rc6, I know I probably should be out of X when I try to upgrade. I also know that I should delete the ~/.kde and ~/.kde2 directories. That is what I'm not sure how to do. Could someone give me the steps on how to do it?
