Doing my homework with K3DSurf. Very handy tool for those who lack imagination :)

Now as we all know, Linux is fun to use. It’s also true that the programmers like to have a little fun of their own. While some of these are Ubuntu specific, some of them are also true for any distribution. Let’s explore, shall we?

Try this:
OK, after you’ve done that, you can move on to others that are non-distro specific. If you’re in GNOME, hit alt+F2 and type “gegls from outer space” without the quotes.Did you know about this?

on my mandriva which Ih ave 2007 spring, it says im using Rpmdrake for my management tool.
is Urpmi something im supposed to be using??
Rpmdrake is a GUI front end to urpmi, which means that it uses urpmi to manage the packages, IIRC. I prefer to use urpmi directly, it is faster.
Arctic, you're fast ! ;)

If you run the KDE Control Center as root and then disable the offending gui effects, perhaps the effects will remain disabled?
I guess it will do it for root only. Besides, I checked that and it doesn't help.
Here how it looks:

I don't use beril, but still have this problem. Every time i disable the gui effects, and they just reappear after i reboot. Strange.

This how you do it:

June 13, 2007 — Today Microsoft Corp. and Linux desktop provider Linspire Inc. announced a broad interoperability, technical collaboration that also includes intellectual property assurances. The agreement promotes customer choice and strengthens the bridge between the Microsoft® Windows® and Linux operating systems.Enhanced Functionality and Interoperability
Microsoft and Linspire will work together on a variety of technical projects designed to enhance interoperability and expand the functionality of Linspire. These include efforts focused on the following:
• Document format compatibility. Linspire will join with Novell Inc., Microsoft and other companies to develop and distribute open source-licensed translators that allow OpenOffice and Microsoft Office users to better share documents. These efforts will enhance customer choice by enabling effective translation between Ecma Open XML and OpenDocument Format documents.
• Instant messaging. Linspire will license Microsoft’s RT Audio Codec to promote voice-enabled interoperability between Linspire’s Pidgin instant messaging client and Microsoft’s instant messaging clients for business, Microsoft Office Communicator, and, for consumers, Windows Live™ Messenger.
• Digital media. Future releases of Linspire will now support the latest Windows Media 10 audio and video codecs, allowing Linspire and Microsoft Windows users to better share digital media files.
• TrueType fonts. Linspire will license popular Microsoft TrueType fonts, including Arial, Georgia®, Times New Roman and Verdana®, so Linspire users have improved experiences creating, editing and viewing files and documents.
• Linspire customers only receive these three technologies (instant messaging, digital media and TrueType fonts) if they purchase a patent SKU. The technologies are not shipped with all Linspire 5.0 distributions.
• Web search. Linspire will select the Live Search service of Windows Live as the Linspire 5.0 default Web search engine, allowing Microsoft to bring Live Search to a broader set of users and providing leading search capabilities to Linspire customers.

We've released version 2.0.1 of Pidgin (formerly Gaim). This is a bugfix release addressing over 100 bugs reported in 2.0.0. Keep those bugs coming in, and we'll continue making regular, frequent releases.

Cool, thanks

Maybe it's an opportunity to wipte everything and start clean with 2007 Spring
I had spent the money for a powerpack last time I got Mandrake, but I'm done spending money on distros...
will the 1 CD version allow me to install the rest from the web or is it limited to prevent you doing that?
Mandriva One (1 CD version) is more than enough. You can install it and later you can add everything you need from easy-urpmi sources. I've done that and it works well so far.
-
I remember Ubuntu 6.06 had a similar update issue (i think it was a kernel update)...
-
Too late for me

I don't believe this is true, I don't think One includes any codecs Free doesn't. What files could you play with One but not Free?
My post is an addition to arctics Mandiva One paragraph and certainly not a comparison with the Free version. I've never installed the free version so i can't say much about it. Have someone checked that issue?
Anyway, sorry for inaccuracy .
-
Mandriva One also includes some proprietary media codecs for mPlayer (by default), feature i find very useful, especially for those who used to Windows.

I want to try this distro myself. Have someone used it before, how is it?
P.S. I've read some reviews on Distrowatch, but i want to hear your opinion.

I found that post in kubuntu forum:
-
Ok, good luck.
-
Thanks for that but acpi=force worked nicely, i don't want to change that.

I changed my window decorations to "Plastik" for exactly this reason.
(From KDE Control Center, Appearance & Themes -> Window Decorations)
Yes, i've figured that out but i like La Ora style and don't want to change that.
