How can i make windows to resize by dragging the top window margin in KDE (disabled by default in 2007.1 One) ?
Thanks.

How can i check if my PC can handle ACPI ?
-
First of all, i have a desktop pentium 3. Second, it seems like mandriva 2007.1 doesn't have any problem with acpi. I really don't know how that acpi thing works. Gooing to google for it now... Do you have a good link where i can learn about it?
-
Strange problem, good that it is solved now... :D
-
My problem was a bit different: i use pentium 3, and am able to shutdown normally on all distros i've tried, except (K)ubuntu. In kubuntu, when i chose to shutdown (even by shutdown -h now) i hear HDs shutting down and then the system stalls, i only get the usual kubuntu shutdown screen. I had to push the shutdown button on a pc to end the process.
I found this solution in one of the posts at http://kubuntuforums.net/, don't remember what exactly. I've seen that some had your poblem too, so take a look there.

I've added acpi=force to menu.lst in order to be able to shutdown the comp properly.
Kubuntu has a tool for managing services, similar to bum, and there i see acpid and others stopped when they should be running.
-
I've installed the new Kubuntu 7.04 and its ok so far, except a shutdown problem i had, but it is solved now. My question is: why there are many system services that should start at boot but aren't actually running? For example acpid should start at boot but its not running. I don't remember having this problem on Mandi or Fedora. Is it normal?
Thanks

I think this thread should be pinned at how-to section, its very useful.

Linus Torvalds Responds To Microsoft Patent Claims
Linus Torvalds, lead developer of the Linux kernel, has a sharp retort to Microsoft executives' statements in a Fortune magazine article that Linux and other open-source code violate 235 Microsoft patents."It's certainly a lot more likely that Microsoft violates patents than Linux does," said Torvalds, holder of the Linux trademark. If the source code for Windows could be subjected to the same critical review that Linux has been, Microsoft would find itself in violation of patents held by other companies, said Torvalds.
"Basic operating system theory was pretty much done by the end of the 1960s. IBM probably owned thousands of really 'fundamental' patents," Torvalds said in a response to questions submitted by InformationWeek. But he doesn't like any form of patent saber rattling. "The fundamental stuff was done about half a century ago and has long, long since lost any patent protection," he wrote.
Microsoft should name the patents that it claims have been violated so the claims can be tested in court or so open-source developers can rewrite code to avoid the violation, Torvalds wrote.
"Naming them would make it either clear that Linux isn't infringing at all (which is quite possible, especially if the patents are bad), or would make it possible to avoid infringing by coding around whatever silly thing they claim," he said.
"So the whole, 'We have a list and we're not telling you,' itself should tell you something," Torvalds said of Microsoft's stance in the Fortune story. And for good measure, he added: "Don't you think that if Microsoft actually had some really foolproof patent, they'd just tell us and go, 'nyaah, nyaah, nyaah!'"
Microsoft would prefer not to actually sue anyone, particularly a Linux user who's also a Microsoft customer. "They'd have to name the patents then, and they're probably happier with the FUD [fear, uncertainty, doubt] than with any lawsuit," Torvalds predicted.

Dell will not include open-source software such as Wine, which lets users run Windows programs on Linux, with the PCs it plans to bundle with Ubuntu Linux, Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of Ubuntu and its commercial sponsor Canonical, said May 3.
"I do not want to position Ubuntu and Linux as a cheap alternative to Windows," Shuttleworth said in an interview with eWEEK following the May 1 announcement that Dell plans to preload Ubuntu on some consumer machines...

Try Ksnapshot, it allows you to capture the whole screen as well as individual window or sector of the screen.

k3b is one of the most important applications for many Linux users. The immensely popular and fully-featured CD / DVD writing application has been a mainstay of the standard Linux desktop since its early releases. Since last year, Sebastian Trüg, the initial author and present lead developer of k3b, has been employed by Mandriva both to work on k3b and to work on the Nepomuk desktop project. We asked Sebastian a few questions about k3b, Mandriva and Nepomuk - here are his answers!

Does it mean that they want to split the free version and the proprietary one, like Red Hat and Fedora?
-
Well, my county isn't there too, but that doesn't really matter, or is it?

try to change the menu settings: start -> system -> menu style configuration
-
Thank you, it does the trick.

Here's the revisions in cvs: mdv_kmenu
To find it in your system do:
slocate -u
then
locate mdv_kmenu.png
then you can use the one linked above or gimp the one you have.
WoW, thanks dude !

I doubt that it is there...

No. The button remains orange, only its background changes. I guess it is some kind of an icon, if i knew where to find it i could change it.
-
Right-click on it > Configure panel > Appearance > Panel background
I mean to change the background of an orange mandriva start button, not to change the background of the panel.
-
Is there any way to change the color of the kicker?
-
I wander who that might be ...
-
Well the error doesn't come back any more, so i guess this case is closed. Thanks everyone.

Yes, i've seen this movie. It is very relevant to current situation.
And it's one of my favorite geek movies too, the other one is "Pirates of Silicon Valley" (again starring Bill and MS)
