  1. i have a problem

i tried to uninstall some packages and  i guess i must have uninstalled some wrong rpms since that now, when i boot, i can only log into a normal user.

i cannot login into root since i don't have the option anymore.

funny thing is when i am in my normal user and i want to get into mandrake control center, i can enter the root password and it will allow me inside mandrake control center.

any idea on how to restore the option to log to root session ?

    :wall:

[moved from Installing Mandrake by spinynorman]

use commands with kdesu. For example

    push alt+f2 and run

    kdesu konqueror

  2. I saw somewhere as edit   /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager and set the DisplayManager

    > setting to gdm from kdm.

But there is not "displaymanager" file or folder in sysconfig folder.

The file is "/etc/sysconfig/desktop". It should contain the line:

    DISPLAYMANAGER=GNOME

You can select the type of session you want (KDE, GNOME or other) from the GDM login display, but if you want GNOME to be the default, add the following line to /etc/sysconfig/desktop

    DESKTOP=GNOME

There is no desktop file in there.

  3. Here is what I got on my screen... Could somebody tell me what to do next? Thanks a MILLION!

    kde base

Some package requested cannot be installed:

    kdeartwork-3.4.0-7.mdk10.1.thac.i586 (due to missing libarts1-1.4.0-5.mdk10.1.thac.i586)

    kdebase-3.4.0-14.mdk10.1.thac.i586 (due to missing libarts1-1.4.0-5.mdk10.1.thac.i586)

    kdebase-kdeprintfax-3.4.0-14.mdk10.1.thac.i586 (due to missing libarts1-1.4.0-5.mdk10.1.thac.i586)

    kdebase-progs-3.4.0-14.mdk10.1.thac.i586 (due to missing libarts1-1.4.0-5.mdk10.1.thac.i586)

    libarts1-1.4.0-5.mdk10.1.thac.i586 (due to unsatisfied libmasc.so.1)

    libkdebase4-3.4.0-14.mdk10.1.thac.i586 (due to missing libarts1-1.4.0-5.mdk10.1.thac.i586)

    libkdecore4-3.4.0-16.mdk10.1.thac.i586 (due to missing libarts1-1.4.0-5.mdk10.1.thac.i586)

    libkdepim2-common-3.4.0-11.mdk10.1.thac.i586 (due to unsatisfied libgpgme.so.11)

    libkdepim2-korganizer-3.4.0-11.mdk10.1.thac.i586 (due to missing libkdepim2-common-3.4.0-11.mdk10.1.thac.i586)

    mandrakelinux-kde-config-file-10.2-6.mdk10.1.thac.noarch (due to missing libarts1-1.4.0-5.mdk10.1.thac.i586)

And then this is what I did: urpmi arts

Some package requested cannot be installed:

    arts-1.4.0-5.mdk10.1.thac.i586 (due to missing libarts1-1.4.0-5.mdk10.1.thac.i586)

    libarts1-1.4.0-5.mdk10.1.thac.i586 (due to unsatisfied libmasc.so.1)

    Continue? (Y/n) n

Then I downloaded libarts1-1.4.0-5.mdk10.1.thac.i58 and did a urpmi, got this msg:

    urpmi libarts1-1.4.0-5.mdk10.1.thac.i586.rpm

Some package requested cannot be installed:

    libarts1-1.4.0-5.mdk10.1.thac.i586 (due to unsatisfied libmasc.so.1)

    Continue? (Y/n) n

REALLY hate this chain of reaction!!!

you should also add other medias with urpmi such as main, contrib packages

  4. I just want to update the packages of the 10.2 rc2 and selected only community of the select system section on the proceed 1 in the easy urpmi web site. RC2 has not firefox 1.0.2, flash, java, wincodec etc. Because of this, I will install these packages of the plf packages.

  5. I installed Mandrake 10.1 official now. Then I upgraded KDE to 3.4 thanks to Thac's packages. Everything is like OK. But I have a new problem now . OS runs level 5. KDE login screen is appeared , but does not log in. I passes this problem changing init level to 3, and then startx in konsole. I am now KDE 3.4. How should I solve this log in problem? I would welcome any idea.

One more, Konqueror has the two entries of bookmarks, that is there are double bookmarks. Also, bookmarks are not saved. When I restart pc, my bookmarks are disappear from bookmark window.

    Thanks.

  6. urpmi kdebase (and after that urpmi kdepim kdeedu kdemultimedia etcetc (have a look in the Mandrake control center to see all the packages)

Konsole said the following. Sorry, How shall I do now?

    [root@localhost niti]# urpmi kdebase

    Continue? (Y/n) n

I passed this problem installing mas package which involves libmasc.so.1 I installed KDE 3.4. But when I login again, KDE splash screen is looking KDE 3.3.2 but KDE 3.4 programs such as tray icon are looking at desktop.

  7. hey, that's neat!!!

but when I boot up it comes to this screen with a analog clock and a couple of boot choices, and a logon and a menu button and when I try to login, it clicks the monitor a few times and then clicks right back to the login screen.

This could be because when I first tried to install this, I did it with the 10.1 link, not having read down far enough in the thread to realize there was also a 10.2 link.  Naturally there were lots of errors on the 10.1 versoin, and then I put the 10.2 version in and that went smoothly.   Anyway, i found I could menu, console login from that screen - I log in and then type kde and 3.4 comes up very nicely.

Obviously I could re-install 10.2 rc2, but since I was cooker current that would take a bit,  and expecting 10.2 final out imminately (wish I knew when - if it were more than a few days, I'd just redo 10.2rc2 and put it on correctly.....

Thanks for your work and investigation in this!!! - sure is nice!!!!!!!!

and any thoughts on how to fix the login loop bug...

    Kristi

Yes, I encountered the same problem today. The login screen is appeared involving many user names (such as admin, root, kdm, halt etc.) and the keyboard was not working after 2-3 second. I could not login KDE. Because of this problem, I had to do the new installation.

  8. During the installation, you will see the partition management section or thing like this. Pick in there custom or manual partition. Delete the partitions and create new partition or partitions. And go on to installation.
