  1. Thanks for the quick replies tyme & michaelcole Fat32 might be the answer, being able to write will be a definate advantage and the 4gb file limit I guess I can do without. I do however seem to remember something about fat32 having fragmenting problems in windows but I am probably wrong. Should I format from within MCC?
  2. After more research, it seems external ntfs hard drives dont mix well with 10.1 What about 2005LE, can anyone read external ntfs hard drives in 2005LE?? Are there any other solutions to sharing an 250gb external drive with windows and linux even if linux is read only?? I'm not really interested in fat32 as I dont want 8 partitions and the 4gb file barrier could be a problem sometimes. Any tips would be appreciated.
  3. I get exactly the same error message.
  4. I have recently purchased an external 250gb hard drive. I have formatted it NTFS as I want to be able to share it with my friends who are not linux users (yet) I have a duel boot pc, Xp & 10.1. Under linux I just want any user to be able to mount it READ ONLY as it only contains music. When I switch it on, it appears on the desktop, but when I try to access it a message appears "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1, or too many mounted file systems please check that the disk is entered correctly" When the drive is switched on my fstab is as below /dev/hdb1 / ext3 defaults 1 1 /dev/hdb8 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hda7 /mnt/50gig ext3 defaults 1 2 //lappy/SharedDocs /mnt/SharedDocs smbfs user, username=Pete, noauto 0 0 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-15,sync,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-15,ro 0 0 /dev/hdb6 /mnt/win_c2 vfat umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d vfat umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda6 /mnt/win_e vfat umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hdb7 /usr ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hdb5 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/sda1 /mnt/removable auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,sync,kudzu,codepage=850,noauto,exec,users 0 0 I have searched through the hardware forum and have found similar topics but I am still unsure, so I thought it safer to ask. CAUTION NOVICE HERE
  5. Thanks for making it so easy! Step 3 was a time consuming pain though!!!
  6. Firstly I didnt know if software or hardware was the right forum but as my problem was the result of hardware failure Im trying here. I have a duel boot PC with lilo as the bootloader, XP is on hda1 (it has about four partitions) and Mandrake 10.1 on a seperate Hard drive, hdb. Recently my power suuply and mainboard died, so I upgraded to a new mainboard, processor etc... Fortunately Linux doesnt have a problem with this, but windows does. So I will have to either repair or reinstall XP, and I have been told that this will overwrite the mbr, which I ASSUME means I will no longer be able to boot into Mandrake. So, after reading a post in Tips and tricks "Backing up and restoring the MBR", I was wondering if this was the answer to my problem. But I have a few questions, like does this apply to a duel boot machine as windows is on a NTFS partition which I didnt think I could write to, and the mbr is located on hda1, Right???, and finally is a sector always 512 bytes {probably a stupid question I Know} but when I formatted the XP partition under windows, I seem to remember something about choosing the size of something and 512 is not what I chose.
  7. I had a look at the man urpmi, but i thought i should ask first before i cause more havok on my machine # rpm --force -ivh urpmi-4.5-29.1.101mdk.noarch.rpm Preparing... ########################################### [100%] 1:urpmi ########################################### [100%] Can't locate URPM.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.6/i386-linux /usr/lib /perl5/5.8.6 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.6/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.6 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.6/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/ vendor_perl/5.8.6 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.5 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.4 / usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.3 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.1 /usr/lib/perl5/vendo r_perl .) at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.5/urpm.pm line 16. 8. My probrems started when rpm´s from my local australian mirror would no longer install (previously everything worked great). I then did urpmi.removemedia -a and then chose japan as my mirror, then the rpm´s from the japan mirror would install-the same rpm´s that wouldn´t install from australian mirror. When i started to notice things not working i did urpmi.removemedia -a and chose australian mirror sites again (but I have a feeling that the names of the sites were different to when I initially set it all up). I tried installing urpmi-4.5-29.1.101mdk.noarch.rpm, but it came up with # rpm -ivh urpmi-4.5-29.1.101mdk.noarch.rpm Preparing... ########################################### [100%] package urpmi-4.5-29.1.101mdk is already installed and no, I couldn´t install with urpmi, it came up with same message Can't locate URPM.pm in @INC, etc, etc.... Can I somehow force it to install even though it says it is already installed?
  9. I tried urpmi.update -a Can't locate URPM.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.6/i386-linux /us r/lib/perl5/5.8.6 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.6/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/site_ perl/5.8.6 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.6/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.6 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.5 /usr/lib/perl5 /vendor_perl/5.8.4 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.3 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5 .8.1 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl .) at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.5/urpm.pm l ine 16. 10. I recently installed some dvd author software and now several things dont work including mcc. I am using Mandrake 10.1 Recently i went to install software from install software in the nice gui in kde, i chose a few programs as i like a choice, all downloaded but wouldnt install for reasons i cant remember. I tried a few times over a couple of days. So then i removed my urpmi sources and installed new sources from another mirror (japan), took ages, normal mirror australia, much quicker. Installed software from japan mirror, it downloaded and installed ok. Some of the downloaded programs would start but others wouldnt, which i didnt think much of. The next day my son tells me that his favourite game (frozen bubble) wont start, so i think i will remove some of the software i have just installed. So i go to Packaging/Remove Software, it wont start, now i start to worry! So i go to command line (SHAKY Ground for me) and try to start mcc from there [root@localhost everyone]# mcc Segmentation fault [root@localhost everyone]# So i google Segmentation fault and dont come up with much i understand, a couple of mentions about accessing memory. Can anyone please point me in the right direction to approach these problems. Because google mentioned memory, I dont know if this has anything to do with it but i thought 246404 used of my 256mb is a lot for konqueror and a mail program to be using [root@localhost everyone]# free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 256376 246404 9972 0 4192 61260 -/+ buffers/cache: 180952 75424 Swap: 1630556 47340 1583216
  11. Thank you did it through windows, all works
  12. my compter is currently configured as follws: Mandrake 10.1 (duel boot xp) hda1 = C windows xp ntfs hda2 = 110gig windows ntfs hdb = linux partitions including a fat 32 shared partition to share media Now I want the 110gig to be a shared drive I was in mcc, I unmounted hda2, went into mount point and made it fat32 (win_d), then i went to format. It gave me a message about rewritng partition table for hda. So i stopped and thought, this wont format hda1 windows as well will it? I hope not because all data on hda2 has been backed up on to hda1. So will mandrake just reformat hda2 and leave hda1 alone or maybe should i reformat from xp?

    mac keyboard

dont know if this helps but i had a very similar problem i have a very cheap keyboard on a pc with exactly the same keyboard problem not getting the @ symbol was a pain to say the least so under the gnome desktop i went to configuration, gnome, keyboard and under the layout tab, tried each keyboard model until it worked which was macintosh, very odd! havnt worked it out under kde yet
  14. Thank you all for your patience and your help! now i can see the partition, so my problem is solved, ...but i dont know why? since my last post, all i have done is this [everyone@localhost everyone]$ su root Password: [root@localhost everyone]# mkdir /mnt/windows mkdir: cannot create directory `/mnt/windows': File exists [root@localhost everyone]# mount -a [root@localhost everyone]# so if the file exists i look through konqueror and sure enough its there if anyone can tell me what has changed i would appreciate it, if not thanks again for your help!!!
  15. i am obviously still doing something wrong using terminal i get this: [everyone@localhost everyone]$ su root Password: [root@localhost everyone]# mount -a mount: mount point /mnt/windows does not exist [root@localhost everyone]# konqueror doesn't see it my fstab currently looks like this: /dev/hdb1 / ext3 defaults 1 /dev/hdb8 /mnt/windows vfat umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hdb7 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-15,sync,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-15,ro 0 0 /dev/hda2 /mnt/win_d ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-15,ro 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hdb6 /usr ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hdb5 swap swap defaults 0 0 control centre says partition is mounted, mount point = /mnt/windows
  16. I have modified fstab as above, but i still cant access partition Should i be able to access partition through konqueror or terminal? if so, how?
  17. thats better, this is what comes up /dev/hdb1 / ext3 defaults 1 1 /dev/hdb8 /15\040gig\040Fat\04032 vfat defaults 0 0 /dev/hdb7 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-15,sync,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-15,ro 0 0 /dev/hda2 /mnt/win_d ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-15,ro 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hdb6 /usr ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hdb5 swap swap defaults 0 0
  18. am i doing this right???? [everyone@localhost everyone]$ su root Password: [root@localhost everyone]# /etc/fstab bash: /etc/fstab: Permission denied [root@localhost everyone]# ls /mnt cdrom/ floppy/ win_c/ win_d/ [root@localhost everyone]# why does it list my partitions on my windows drive and not my fat 32 partition on this drive? and why do i always get permission denied??
  19. I cant seem to access my windows partition, or i dont know how! I have recently installed mandrake on a second hard drive my first drive is purely windows, 2 ntfs partitions my second drive has usual linux partitions and a 15 gig fat 32 partition at the end (hdb8) and i dont know how to access it. if i go through a browser it says permission denied the partition was formatted through linux and can be accessed through windows. in windows i have put some sound files and some pictures on it. and under windows i have shared the drive. under linux i have gone to a terminal and su root, i enter password and then try /dev/hdb8 /mnt/15 gig Fat 32, (cause that is the partitions name), and i get "Permission denied" i have also tried /mnt/vfat/ and i get the same response What am i doing wrong??? cause of my misguided attempts i have noticed as linux is shutting down that there is a few "Failed" warnings about trying to unmount drives that dont exist ( names that i have misspelt while trying to mount fat 32 ) Can anyone please steer me in the right direction?
  20. Thank You SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much aussiejohn I jumpered 1st drive to master 2nd drive to slave (was using cable select) went into bios, selected detect all drives, up pops second drive, did yet another install, and here i am using mozilla on mandrake for the first time You are an OZZIE LEGEND!!! now to go and discover problem solvered regards pete
  21. Thanks for the quick reply AussieJohn When you say "pretend upgrade", i assume you mean upgrade instead of install at the prompt, and if that is so mandrake installer took me straight to the end of the installer, up to "Reboot" so i didnt get the option of grub. Then theres the bios; primary drive says 137gig ( like it always has ) and LBA is on. BUT primary slave says nothing, eg all blank, like the the bios cant see the slave drive ( which it used to before trying to install mandrake) , must be something in this, mandrake installer can see drive but bios cant after linux install, m$ disk manager, for the same drive, has no volume label but apart from that, knows that the disk has basic healthy "unknown partitions" And as for the partioning, Thank You for the advice i thought there was too many partitions
  22. I have installed mandrake 10.1 on a second hard drive on my pc. All appears to go quite well until i reboot. As the machine is booting, it comes up with an error: L 01 01 01 etc..., which is apparently a LILO error (disk error possibly). I have to use cd 1 to restore windows loader. I try installing LILO on floppy instead of mbr and get error: Fatal:filesystem would be destroyed by lilo boot sector: /dev/fd0. So i try putting grub image on floppy and boot from that. More errors, grub loads i select linux: error 17 cant mount selected partition, i edit to (hd0,1), same error, i change to (hd1,0) or (hd1,1): selected disc does not exist. I try hdb or hdb0 or hdb1: error 23: error while parsing number. I have tried installing about a dozen times trying various partition options, but always to no avail. I must be missing something very simple. This is roughly how i am trying to install: 1st drive: 80gig NTFS with M$ XP SP1 110gig NTFS for music & games 2nd drive 5gig ext3 / 100mb ext3 /boot 1.6 gig swap 7 gig ext3 /usr 5gig ext3 /var 22gig ext3 /home I think i should be making a fat32 partition to swap data between the os's, when i finally get mandrake running (any advise on how i should configure 2nd 40 gig drive would be appreciated) All i want to do is boot mandrake!!!, from floppy if necessary but duel boot would be fantastic. Any help anyone can give will be much appreciated. and please be patient as i am very new to linux (havn't been able to use it yet). Specs are: amd athlon xp 1700 k7s5a mainboard 256 ram 200gig WD 40gig Seagate 64 nvidia gf2 pioneer 107 dvd burner THANKS IN ADVANCE
