  1. glxinfo | grep direct I did get a yes glxgears I dont trust, as the fps varies lots. Now I get between 1000+ - 1200+ frames, where as before I installed the driver I got between 700+ - 1500+ fps (checking at various times) Considering google earth works fantastic now compared to before, I would say it is a success Thanks lots Pete
  2. Well that all went smoothly (I think) Just seen your last reply but I have already installed proprietry driver, all my urpmi sources were set up properly afew weeks ago. Just tried google earth and it is heaps better than before, so I "assume" it is all working properly. Is that enough to know that 3D rendering is working? or is there something else I can do? Also, it said about installing a control panel, which I "assume" is a gui for controlling settings. If so where do I find it? ps card is a 9250 Thanks
  3. WOW, great reply, thanks Kernel is updated and kernel-source is installed, (I was running 2.6.12.19) I will attempt driver install tomorrow night after work (kids want computer back) Cheers Pete
  4. I have started this new topic because my last one was a question and this is a problem. I went to install via urpmi and I got: [root@localhost everyone]# urpmi ati-xorg The following packages can't be installed because they depend on packages that are older than the installed ones: dkms-2.0.5.9-3mdk dkms-ati-8.26.18-0.1.20060plf ati-xorg-8.26.18-0.1.20060plf Continue? (Y/n) y The package(s) are already installed [root@localhost everyone]# So I thought i would manually install proprietry driver, but 1, I dont know to install kernel headers, and 2, i went to install kernel source but I am not sure which one to select as I think my kernel is 2.6.12.19 (thats what it says in configure your desktop) and I dont see that in the list. Maybe I should choose 2.6-2..6.12.-22mdk? I am using 2006 installed of a mandriva one live cd Any ideas what is the best way to approach this problem would be appreciated.
  5. Thanks for the very informative/helpful reply Based on this I will opt for easy urpmi. If I have any problems I can always uninstall and go option 2 for newer driver instead. Thanks again
  6. I was wondering what the difference is between: 1. installing driver by urmpi ati-xorg, or 2. downloading and installing ATI Proprietary linux driver manually are there pros and cons? ps. I dont really understand the XFree86 and xorg stuff!
  7. Sorry tyme, reading back I realised I didn't explain myself very clear. What I meant when I said "do I have to navigate somewhere first to change this line?" I meant do I have to cd to a certain directory first, cause when I was pasting into the terminal, the error I was getting in the output log of acidrip was coming up straight away in the terminal. Afterwards I realised my mistake, in acidrip I always do it in two passes, so I was actually pasting in two lines and there was a return at the end of the first line which was executing the first command before I could do anything else. Anyway you have solved my problem. Thanks again
  8. I noticed that I cant change that line in the queue tab and the link you pasted mentioned you have to do it in a terminal. I am not sure as how to do this, do I have to navigate somewhere first to change this line? And I would assume that I would have to do this every time! Also, is this line anything to worry about: Compiled with runtime CPU detection - WARNING - this is not optimal! To get best performance, recompile MPlayer with --disable-runtime-cpudetection. Finally, is there possibly an older verion of acidrip (I am using 0.14-2) as I didnt have this problem when I was using 10.1 Thanks
  9. When I am using acidrip to create an .avi with xvid codec, I get a error message as soon as I click the start button: "Mencoder interupted by user" At the end of the output log I get an odd message: MEncoder dev-CVS-051220-04:08-4.0.1 © 2000-2005 MPlayer Team CPU: Intel Pentium 4/Celeron D Prescott; Pentium D/XE Smithfield; Xeon Nocona,Irwindale (Family: 15, Stepping: 3) CPUflags: Type: 15 MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1 Compiled with runtime CPU detection - WARNING - this is not optimal! (error parsing cmdline) AcidRip message - Clearing 2 remaining playlist items AcidRip message - Mencoder interrupted by user I have uninstalled and reinstalled mencoder. mplayer and acidrip, but no difference All worked fine in mdk 10.1
  10. The cooker version I downloaded was by mistake. I got it from a dodgy site and it was not labeled cooker. (lesson learnt) I downloaded 2006 dvd from a mirror listed in the mandriva home page, 2gb and 12 hours later it had a bad md5sum, so I downloaded mandriva one from same mirror. Ran it as live cd and printer appeared ok, so I installed it and the problems I was having are gone. By doing what I did it is hard to determine what was actually wrong, but what I did notice was that mandriva one uses cups 1.1, where the cooker version used cups 1.2, maybe that has something to do with it, maybe not. Thanks all for your input!
  11. Thank you all for your replies I should point out at this stage that I realised that the version of 2006 that I downloaded says cooker as it starts to boot up, and If I had known I would not have downloaded it. Having /home on a seperate partition, I decide to do a clean install, then did a urpmi --update / auto select, this has made no difference, configure your computer will see the printer and work, configure your desktop-same error as before. (plus I lost a few apps and java, but these can be replaced) John, I had hoped that doing what I mentioned above would make sure that all the correct packages were installed, and yes 10.1 it went very smooth. Adding printer manually made no difference. Ixthusdan, I wasnt aware of any drivers that I could use, and again because it worked so well in 10.1 I didnt think that it would be necessary, but of course I am a novice. And in configure your desktop/ peripherals i get a cups error, so I dont evevn get a choice to choose a driver like I can get in configure your computer. Ianw1974, this is a printout of what you mentioned: [root@localhost everyone]# service cups status cupsd (pid 2325) is running... Thanks again all for your help!
  12. Deleting and adding again in web browser didnt work, must have done something wrong, I couldn't set printer options and test page printed the postscript as text not image! output is: [root@localhost everyone]# rpm -qa | grep cups libgnomecups-0.2.2-2mdk cups-1.2.0-0.4876.1mdk libgnomecups-1.0_1-0.2.2-2mdk cups-common-1.2.0-0.4876.1mdk libcups2-1.2.0-0.4876.1mdk cups-drivers-2006-9mdk gutenprint-cups-5.0.0-0.12mdk Should I try removing and adding another way? btw PnP is off
  13. Sorry for the late reply, sleep, work, etc cups is on 2,3,4,5 and set to start at boot in system/services when I go to localhost:631 the printer is already there (as default printer), all the options are available, and I can print test page, would it make a difference if I delete the printer from there and add it again? I did do an upgarde not a clean install
  14. Just upgraded to 2006 from 10.1 where my desktop epson stylus printer worked fine. But in 2006 some programs will print, some wont. In System/configure you compter/printers all is ok and can print test page, Open Office 1 & 2 print fine as does Firefox. But in System/configure your desktop/peripherals/printer, I get: Unable to retrieve the printer List. Error message recieved from manager: Connection to CUPS server failed. Check that the cups server is correctly installed and running. Error: host not found Acrobat, KDE; Kontact, KWrite come up with a similar message: An error occurred while retrieving the printer list: Connection to CUPS server failed. Check that the cups server is correctly installed and running. Error: host not found And there is no printer to choose from. Scribus has printer: EpsonStylusC41SX and I can choose print options, but when I hit the print button, nothing comes out and no error message. X printing Panel says EpsonStylusC41SX:Destination not available! Any suggestions always appreciated
  15. Thank you, again you have solved my problem!

    New Modem

I went to boot loader and checked Force no apic and restarted, no change. I modified modprobe.conf as suggested and restarted. As linux boots "Bringing up interface eth0" only takes about 5 seconds where as before it was taking about 30. Went to home page in firefox, came up quickly, went to mandrivausers.org again quite quickly, then tried other sites "blah, blah could not be found please check the name and try again" continually came up. So it worked and then stopped working. So I unchecked Force no apic, restarted, no difference Removed added line from modprobe.conf, restarted, no difference So now im back to where I started except "blah, blah could not be found please check the name and try again" comes up quickly where as before a page would take ages to load if it didn't timeout first Boot into windows to post this message, "blah, blah could not be found please check the name and try again", turn off modem and router connection is back. Reboot linux added line to modem.conf checked Force no apic and restarted, it works very quick, quicker than it used to with old modem. I have tried about a dozen sites with no issues except kde doesnt play sounds as it boots up or shuts down which is trivial I know Could not find a file icfg-eth0 and I did a search of / resolv.conf nameserver 192.168.0.1 search localhost ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:13:D4:17:AB:6F inet addr:192.168.0.2 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:1328 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:1506 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:1255003 (1.1 Mb) TX bytes:273495 (267.0 Kb) Interrupt:5 Base address:0x2c00 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:190 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:190 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:12482 (12.1 Kb) TX bytes:12482 (12.1 Kb Thanks heaps for your help but just one more question, should ifconfig have all those errors?

    New Modem

I am at work now so I wont be able to get infront of my box for another 8 hours. Yes I believe it is a realtec so I might try the suggestions you made ianw1974 because even with my old modem it seemed to go a bit slower compared to windows. If I have no luck I will post the contents of the above mentioned files

    New Modem

I have just bought a new modem/router as my old one just died. The new one is a NETGEAR DG632. After I installed it, it appeared not to work. So getting desperate, I booted into windows XP and it worked fine, surf the net real fast. So i booted back into Mdk 10.1 and it worked, slow really slow. It takes about 3 minutes to get to this site and I have a 512/128 account! I have got windows and mandrake connection set to DHCP, so I cant see what the problem could be, and the box says works with windows mac and "other operating systems running a TCP/IP network", and I am using ethernet. Also NO other program wil start if the cable is unplugged, which I thought was a bit strange. Any suggestions are always appreciated.
  22. After more research I have set up 2 partitions with "drive setup" on mac os, then installed mac os 9 on 2nd partition. Then using diskdrake in installer divide 1st partition into "apple_bootstrap", /, swap. /home. All went quite well, except a message saying if I didnt see the bootloader, to open firmware and type in some stuff. But I do see bootloader. If I type "l" linux boots, if I type "m" or hold down m key, I get DEFAULT CATCH!, code=fffffff6 at %SRR0: method <draw-rectangle> not found; ihandle=ffbc29c0 phandle=ff901308 then machine locks, I have to kill power. After googling the error or parts thereof, it would appear to be a open firmware problem with no definative answer. Hopefully someone here could shed some light on the matter.
  23. I have been attempting to get an old G4 mac to duel boot mac os9 & mandriva 2005 ppc, but it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. I have tried several times to install, but I end up going in circles. If I make partions with "drive setup" on mac os (and install system 9) and then do the linux install, I can change the partition type and format the / swap /home partitions but I cant make the all important Apple Bootstrap partition. I set the type to apple bootstrap or apple hfs and when I go to format it, I get an error that doesnt know what to use in "type" If I do all partition in diskdrake it appears to work, but when I install mac os on hfs partition it only sees the partition as 890mb when infact it is 5000mb then when I choose m for mac at bootloader prompt screen flickers and ends up back at bootloader prompt (linux and cd boot fine) The hard drive has 8 mini mac partitions for drivers, patches etc..., then I make 1mb bootstrap partition then mac hfs partition for mac install and then a / swap and /home partion, so bootstrap is on hda9 mac on hda10 etc... what does worry me is that fdisk for hda after listing size, heads, sectors, cylinders then says "Disk /dev/hda doesnt contain a valid partition table" Any advice would be much appreciated
  24. Thank you all for your comments, you have all been very helpful. I am still a bit unsure as to what I will do, but I guess Ill try the fat32 option as well as experiment with a newer version of mandriva. My aim is to have an external that my family can just switch on and use and that can be shared with friends who are windows users. Maybe the windows users could learn to read ext3! That would be nice. I guess there is no easy answer yet. Thanks again all for your help
  25. I only want to be able to put music files on it and then read them again, will this cause fragmentation problems? I got a large drive to store as much as I can, I dont want to loose it to wasted space As for the recovery, well everything is backed up anyway
