Well, the solution that I've implimented is to save all of the current tabs in a bookmarks-folder and to set Firefox preferences so that it starts with a blank page. Firefox will warn me after the next boot if the network is down and I can correct that, then I just load all of the tabs from the bookmarks-folder. Quite a neat little Firefox-facility, that. :D Thanks to you all for your help. Sorry, have just noticed a slight error; Firefox preferences are set to start my home-page, not a blank one. :woops:

In fact, I went for your recommendation, coverup, backing up with tar. It works well and I've even recovered the data once so I know that it works both ways B) . WRT to your suggestion earlier in this thread, coverup, when you said "...Your shared files will now be in /home/username/data; filebrowsing is easier that way ...", I now can't get Konqueror to display the partition's contents under my /home directory. I can't understand this because I'm pretty sure that it DID work once (under 2006). The data is definitely on the partition but just can't be displayed. Is it necessary to tweek Konqueror's configuration or something? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Edit: OK, perhaps the reboot fixed it - I'm convinced that I didn't - because the partition is now displayed as expected. :D Many thanks for everyone's help

Yes, I've already tried that, which works of course. My problem is, however, that I often forget to close Firefox and, should the network be down the next time that I log in (which happens regularly ), Firefox starts with all the tabs containg errors. Then I have to go through reloading all of them (often many) :huh: That's why I would like to prevent Firefox from autostarting.

Thanks. There's also that directory in 2008, but it only contains a file which looks like a config of those apps to be auto-started next time. :D I think that it's overwritten at each shutdown :unsure:

Still a few teething-troubles with 2008. :huh: The audio system clicks and crackles permanently - strangely, this varies in volume when the cursor-slider (correct term?) is moved in Firefox - and the pcmcia hot-swapping still doesn't work. pcmciautils is installed but MCC/System/System-services does not contain 'hotplugging' (which 2006 did; perhaps it's no longer necessary?) Note: have just googled "hotplug mandriva 2008" and discovered a lively discussion about problems with hotplug; would appear to be problematic. Any tips? Thanks.

Well, having smashed my working-2006 I chose the option of installing (not updating) 2008, which is what I'm now using. Thanks for all of your comments. Now, hopefully this is not the wrong forum, but I'll ask anyway 1) I quite liked KDiskFree in 2006, especially for launching Konqueror, but can't find it in 2008. Is there an equivalent? 2) I also like to cut the internet connection when I'm not using it (who mentioned paranoia? ;) ) but have only been able to do that thus far via MCC, which is far too inconvenient for me. Any tips on getting the connection-icon back onto the taskbar, as was possible in 2006? Many thanks.

Only a slight panic, I've just done an update of 2008 over what I thought was a TEST-version of 2006. I'm willing to bet a years wages that I DID select the correct partition, but have now discovered that my WORKING-version has been updated. Now... a VERY long shot... Is it possible to UNINSTALL 2008, i.e. retrieve my working-2006? Thanks.

Have just read in "http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/pcmcia/cardmgr-to-pcmciautils.html" that a prerequisite for the correct operation of "pccardctl" is kernel 2.6.13-rc1 or newer; mine is vmlinuz-2.6.12-12mdk (mva2006). Are we wasting our time with this version and wouldn't it be easier to just update to, say, mva2008?

I did "urpmi pcmciautils", then removed the hdd-card and the system didn't freeze (progress??). However, when I re-inserted it and tried to mount in KDiskFree (because the system did NOT auto-mount it), the response was Called: mount /dev/hde1 mount: only root can mount /dev/hde1 on /mnt/pcmciafat and when I tried to mount it as root I got [root@localhost ~]# mount /dev/hde1 /mnt/pcmciafat mount: special device /dev/hde1 does not exist It looks as though the I/O ports and/or the udev rules DO need tweeking, as you suggested, scarecrow?

When I remove the pcmcia-card of either the zip-drive or the external HDD (with EACH drive idle), the system completely freezes, requiring a reboot (at least, I haven't discovered any other way of waking it up :unsure: ). On the assumtion that it IS possible to hot-swap pcmcia devices, I appear to be doing something wrong; perhaps you have to warn the system somehow that a card is about to be removed? I'm using mva2006/kde on a Tosh Sat 4600 Pro. Has anyone any ideas? Thanks.

Yup. that works; many thanks. I'd completely forgotten about /etc/rc.local, haven't used it for some time :huh: . WRT "codepage=...", I'd already tried removing that, without success. Not important, it's been solved now. Many thanks also to all of you others who helped. :thumbs: Before leaving this thread, I've just got one more request. All of this fiddling with the partition has made me realise that I need to back it up (should have been doing it ages ago, careless me :D ) Anyway, is there a simple app/script out there which will copy the data from the partition to an external HDD, but only copying THE DIFFERENCES to last time, i.e. only copying those files that are newer or didn't previously exist on the back-up (if I'm making myself clear)? Well, it certainly LOOKS like a syntax problem, because when I do the following (as root) # umount zstore # mount /dev/hda7 /home/lawrence/zqstore # chown lawrence:lawrence /home/lawrence/zqstore everything is as I want it to be, i.e. the partition appears in my /home/lawrence directory AND is (so far.....) read/writeable by me . All I need now is the correct fstab command-line :unsure:

No luck, I'm afraid, with "uid=..." and "gid=..."; still no mount. And as for man mount, I imagine that Mandarin-Chinese is probably easier. :D

Thanks John, but I rather think that the problem lies somewhere in the section setuid=lawrence,setgid=lawrence,exec,users,codepage=850 0 0 because the partition CAN be mounted if I remove that from the mount command. The directory names ARE probably confusingly similar; :unsure: zstore is the mount-point given to the partition when I formatted it (which is a directory in the main file-structure (correct??) and where it is mounted at boot - according to KDiskFree, anyway) and zqstore is the mount-point which I created in my own /home/username directory, where I WANT to mount it.
