  1. Thanks, scarecrow, did as you suggested and I THINK  the installation was successful - at least I received a box telling me so. The problem is that I now cannot find the app (assuming that it IS one) ; am I missing something here?
  2. Thanks all, found 'wine-20050614-1.mdk10.2.thac.i586.rpm' and 'winelib-0.3-1mdk.src.rpm' in RPM-Search. However, when I tried to install (by double-clicking) I was rewarded with the message: unable to access hdlist file of "main", medium ignored. This clearly is the wrong way to install stuff in Mandrake; some more help is desperately requested.
  3. Well, I've managed to get the bar up, as you suggested. Many thanks. Now can anyone help with your other suggestion, the drawers, which I have not yet been able to conjure up?
  4. I need to run a Windoz internet app and would prefer to run it in 10.2, if that is possible (because I kid myself that 10.2 is more secure that Windoz  ). Am I correct in this assumption and, if so, does a suitable simulator for 10.2 exist? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  5. Haven't been able to try it in ernest yet, but it looks to be pretty much what I'm after. Many thanks.
  6. I have entered dep_hell (see iphitus at mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=10600) with AbiWord, so have abandoned that avenue. Despite having applied all the optimisations listed (which definitely HAVE improved Open Office's load-time) I am still on the lookout for a smaller WP-package. Any other suggestions?
  7. I like Lotus's Smart Centre in Win 2k Pro for keeping my applications tidy, and was wondering if there is anything like it out there for LE 2005. Just for those who do not know what Smart Centre looks like: It's a bar across the desktop-top, containing a series of user-defined DRAWERS, each drawer containing a series of user-defined FOLDERS, into which the user can place any number of application short-cuts or of data-file short-cuts (as is the wont of Windoz). One opens a drawer, then a folder, clicks on the app/data-file and, lo and behold, it runs/opens in an app. Very handy, and I'm sure that something similar must exist in Linux (or, at least, I hope so)
  8. Found it just where you said. Have also tried it and am impressed with the logic of its interface. Many thanks.
  9. Yup, you're right, it is EXACTLY where you described. I was pretty sure that Linux had more than one good burner, but, unless you're in the know, the title k3b could be that of the proverbial kitchen sink. Anyway, it looks very good, at least with a more logical MMI than Nero!! Cheers, Lawrence
  10. Is there a CD burner in the LE 2005 distribution? If so, what is it called and, if not, how do I get hold of one?
  11. Sorry, still confusd!! How do I tell the mirror that I only want "libfribidi0-0.10.4-5mdk.i586.rpm" and not (presumeably) a whole load of software which, on my dial-up connection, is estimated to take over 4 hours to download.
  12. When I tried the Easy-Urpmi tool listed, I got the message: Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. So I tried to install from the DVD and was told "unable to install due to unsatisfied libfribidi.so.0" Somewhat confusing; how come the installation from DVD failed, I would have expected everything to have been present.
  13. Thanks. I managed to install gnumerics-1.4.2 from my installation DVD, which looks just what I'm after. When I tried to install Abiword using the instructions from abisource.com I was rewarded with the following output (I did an 'su -' beforehand): ***** [root@localhost ~]# urpmi.addmedia abisource http://www.abisource.com/downloads /abiword/latest/Linux/Mandriva/2005/RPMS/ with hdlist.cz using different removable device [/dev/hdc] for "Installation Download DVD (cdrom1)" added medium abisource write config file [/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg] examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.Installation DownloadDVD (cdrom1).cz] computing md5sum of existing source hdlist (or synthesis) retrieving source hdlist (or synthesis) of "abisource"... http://www.abisource.com/downloads/abiword...2005/RPMS/hdlis t.cz found probed hdlist (or synthesis) as hdlist.cz ...retrieving done examining hdlist file [/var/cache/urpmi/partial/hdlist.abisource.cz] writing list file for medium "abisource" built hdlist synthesis file for medium "abisource" found 0 headers in cache removing 0 obsolete headers in cache write config file [/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg] [root@localhost ~]# urpmi abiword Some package requested cannot be installed: abiword-2.2.9-0.1.102mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied libfribidi.so.0) Continue? (Y/n) y [root@localhost ~]# ***** It looks as though it failed to install correctly, or am I just being pessemistic? Some feedback would be appreciated.
  14. I do not use open-office in 10.2 because it takes so long to load (only 1ghz processor). Does anyone know of a smaller (faster?) version of a WP and a spreadsheet, both with just basic features? Alternatively, is it possible to trim open-office to a more compact form?
  15. I use 10.2 LE (on a Toshiba Satallite Pro 4600) with an HP psc1215 printer. Normally this works well, except if the printer is switched off at boot. Then printing hangs and the only solution is to re-boot. It seems that some process or another (cups?) locks up if the printer is not on at boot. Is there any way to force the responsible process to resume operation without having to reboot?
  16. I am currently using dial-up with a pcmcia-modem and am considering changing to ntl-broadband. My ethernet interface is called " ‎EtherExpress PRO/100" in media-class "NETWORK_ETHERNET" (on a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600). I do not want to risk changing over if this configuration does not work, however, so: can anyone provide any tips on the possibility of success? Alternatively I could try a USB-connection. Which is likely to be better? I am using 10.2 LE.
  17. Sorry, haven't had any luck. If an mm kernel is a package containing the string '.mm' in its name then there isn't one on my DVD. Or should I be downloading it? Still a bit confused.
  18. Thanks John. I thought that I had done as suggested the first time but obviously not, because this time it worked exactly as you said. No problems. Thanks also to scarecrow and all others who contributed.
  19. Nothing is as simply as it should be :-(. In Tools -> Extensions the box is empty, so I assume that the downloaded file is residing in the wrong place (currently my Home dir). Do you know offhand where it has to go?
  20. Thanks scarecrow, did as you suggested and downloaded a file called 'sessionsaver-02-dev.xpi'. Trouble is, I don't know what to do with this. VERY CONFUSED. I have been working in IT for about 30 years and thought I understood a good deal about it, but this makes me feel like a beginner.
  21. Thanks John. I did as you suggested, went to Extensions in Firefox but couldn't find anything called Restore. Also checked for Mozilla being installed in 10.2 by using MCC -> Software Management -> Uninstall but could only find Mozilla Firefox (which I assume is the one that I am currently using).
  22. I can' find Mozilla on my DVD, only Firefox, so it looks as though I need some other source. What I liked about Mozilla in 10.1 was the ability to automatically default to the site that was in use at the previous session; I haven't been able to find this facility in Firefox.
  23. I am currently using firefox in 10.2, which I do not particularly like; I prefer mozilla. Does anyone know how to install mozilla without having to download it via the site (I am not broadband)? [moved from Terminal Shell Commands, etc by spinynorman]
  24. Searching for some help on hibernate I found the following (somewhere): "On my laptop I knew suspend to disk a.k.a. hibernate worked fine with Mandrakelinux 10.1. On Mandriva 2005 LE however, suspend to RAM worked properly, for the very first time, but suspend to disk didn't. Switching to the multimedia kernel was what finally brought on double happiness, do as root: urpmi 2.6.10-3.mm.24mdk." However, when I tried this I got the message: "no package named 2.6.10-3.mm.24mdk" Can anyone say what this means? Also, would like to find out a bit more about urpmi; can anyone point me to a site which provides explainations. I use a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600.
  25. Did exactly as suggested and it worked. Many thanks again . Interestingly, however, in 10.1 the owner/group is set to 500/500 which means no write access to the device at all. VERY STRANGE!! Can only assume that the read/write properties-access has been significantly recoded from 10.1 to 10.2, thereby causing this problem which, in fact, constitutes some kind of development fault. Not important, since I intend to concentrate on 10.2 in future. Once again, many thanks.
