  1. Thanks, solarian, amarok looks just the ticket. Am having a few probs with ripperx, however; it rips CDs to .WAVs alright, but I cannot find any way of converting these to .MP3s. When I try to convert directly from CD -> MP3 ripperx just generates junk. Perhaps I need to get its configuration right; any tips, anyone? Thanks.
  2. Did what I should have done in the first place, and installed ripperx via the MCC (dead easy, really ). However, I still need an MP3-player; mp3blaster doesn't seem to like my setup. Any suggestions, anyone? Thanks
  3. I'm still ( :o  ) using LE2005, I'm afraid. But thanks, anyway.
  4. I've downloaded ripperX-2.7.0.tar.gz from sourceforge.net/project/, but haven't installed anything from a .gz before, and don't know how to proceed. Could someone give me a tip, please (especially, do I have to perform this as root)? Thanks
  5. I've just downloaded skype-1.3.0.53-1mdk.i586.rpm from the site recommended by 'tyme' on Mar 13 2006 (many thanks, BTW :P ). However, I can't remember how to install the app; can someone help me out? Thanks.
  6. Great, I can now access java and javac. Many thanks until the next time, because I most definitely WILL be back
  7. Many thanks, ian and neddie; I followed both of your tips and am pretty sure that both java and javac have now been successfully installed. The next problem is probably a PATH one, because javac cannot be found from my home directory. Could you tell me where the file is that defines the PATH? I DID manage to change it once but forgot to note where the file resides  . Thanks.
  8. This time I downloaded jdk-1_5_0_09-linux-i586.rpm (from java.com) and tried to install that; however, the same error-message occurred (see below). According to konqueror, the owner of "/var/lib/rpm/RPMLOCK" and "Packages database in /var/lib/rpm" is root; should I be in a root-konsole for the installation? I'm always a bit charey about installing as root, which is why I haven't just tried it. konsole-output>>>>>>>>>> Do you agree to the above license terms? [yes or no] y Unpacking... 9. Yes, neddie, I AM trying to install the JDK version, although whether it should be 1.5 or 1.6, I don't know
  10. I've just tried to install java, following the instructions contained in MottS's post "SI-03: How do I install JAVA ?" During the process the following error-messages appeared: sh jdk-6-rc-linux-i586-rpm.bin Pre-Release Software Evaluation Agreement :: :: :: Do you agree to the above license terms? [yes or no] y Unpacking... Checksumming... Extracting... UnZipSFX 5.50 of 17 February 2002, by Info-ZIP (Zip-Bugs@lists.wku.edu). inflating: jdk-6-rc-linux-i586.rpm error: cannot open lock file ///var/lib/rpm/RPMLOCK in exclusive mode error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm Despite these, I continued to the end, as described in the post. I then tried to run a test-program (with javac helloworld.java), which resulted in the message: bash: javac: command not found On searching the disk for *java* and *javac*, neither was found. I assume that the above error-messages were, in fact, significant. Can anyone help me out? Thanks.
  11. Yup, that works, just need to play with them to figure out how to get the required control . Thanks. :D
  12. Thanks to you both for your help. Mousedrake worked well, as does the mouse (now). Why the system didn't find a generic PS2-mouse is strange, but never mind  I'll have a look at the log later. Hanking back to my original post, any tips on non-mouse navigation? Cheers.
  13. I've just installed MV2007 and my mouse is dead. Looks seriously like a software problem  , because it's working now (in LE2005). The mouse-stick on the laptop (Toshiba sat pro 4600) doesn't work either in MV2007. Strange!! Is this a known problem? In any case, I'd like some help, please, on how to solve this little snag. Thanks Edit: Has just occurred to me: could anyone tell me how to navigate around the various frames WITHOUT the mouse, then I might be able to use (for example) the MCC to investigate this further. 14. Thanks :P , but that didn't work either. I can't waste anymore time on the problem at the moment, so will have to return to it later. Cheers.
  15. Well I'm not sure because, according to the Firefox Add-On page, Session Manager 0.4.3 works with: Firefox 1.5 - 1.5.0.* ALL  My version of FF is 1.5.0.2, so I can't explain its not working.
  16. Thanks, Electraglider. My version of FF doesn't contain the 'search for updates' item in the help-menu, so I went with daniewicz's suggestion, which worked. Once again, many thanks :P
  17. I installed Session Manager (using LE2005), expecting it to work like Session Saver, but no joy. Doesn't save the session, so have reverted to SS. Presumeably it needs initialising, but I wasn't at all successful there. Has anyone got a tip on this? Thanks
  18. Thanks again, but that didn't solve the problem. However, I did what I should have done in the first place  and read the FAQ's, where it stated: How do I enable software installation? In Firefox 1.5 this preference still exists, but it is now accessed through about:config. Find xpinstall.enabled and set it to true by double clicking on it or by right clicking and choosing reset. After I'd done just that, it worked. Anyway, thanks once again. :D
  19. Thanks, daniewicz, your method worked perfectly. However, there's still one (small  ) problem; when attempting to install Session Manager I get the message 'Software installation is currently disabled....'. In Edit/Preferences/Content/Warn me when web sites try to install... (box ticked) the Exceptions are listed as 'addons.mozilla.org' and 'update.mozilla.org', which I would have thought to be sufficient. Any further tips, please.
  20. I'm still using LE2005 (well, it's not broke, so why fixit? :P ), and firefox 1.0.2 I would also like to install Session Manager but this only works with ff v1.5 (according to the error-message, anyway). My attempt to update ff also failed, only ff 1.0.2 was available in the MCC update list. Is it possible to install a newer ff-version into LE2005 and, if so, how? Thanks.
  21. Just for interest sake, the suse-10 entry is: /dev/fd0 /media/floppy subfs noauto,fs=floppyfss, procuid, nodev, nosuid, sync 0 0 which, as mentioned, works well.
  22. arctic, my floppy entry in /etc/fstab looked almost identical to yours, except that mine contained 'iocharset=iso8859-1' (instead of '-15'). Anyway, I tried your entry, ian, and, yoohoo , it seems to work. The only difference is that the floppy is not automatically mounted (presumeably 'noauto'), but when I mount it via KDiskFree it reads the floppy immediately and also writes to it pretty rapidly. Will keep it under observation. Many thanks to you both. :P
  23. Just wanted to say that my floppy-drive problem has not disappeared, and am hoping that someone may have a useful input. Thanks.
  24. Thanks Steve, I tried your suggestion, but there's still a problem. There IS an improvement, however, in that eth1 no longer fails with the Xircom-card inserted :) During the setup-procedure of "Network&Internet/New interface" of MCC, no "/dev/modem" entry appears in the device-list (only ttyS0 to ttyS7); it looks as though the OS fails to recognise the modem-half (it may also fail on the ethernet-half). With my USR-XJ1560 card in the same slot, the OS recognises that and the "/dev/modem" entry is available. My /dev/pcmcia/config entry now looks like this: card "Xircom CreditCard Ethernet 10/100 + Modem 56" version "Xircom", "*", "CEM56" manfid: 0x0105, 0x110a bind "xirc2ps_cs", "serial_cs" Any further tips would be much appreciated. Thanks again PS: could you tell me the command for listing the system's resource-allocations (am interested in ethx)?
  25. I am trying to install a Xircom Ethernet/Modem pcmcia-card into my mva2006 system. In a root-konsole, when I enter: 'cardctl ident', I get: product info: "Xircom", "CreditCard Ethernet 10/100 + Modem 56", "CEM56", "1.00" manfid: 0x0105, 0x110a function: 2 (serial) I've tried to convert this into an approp. form for /etc/pcmcia/config, i.e. into: card "Xircom CreditCard Ethernet 10/100 + Modem 56" version "Xircom", "*", "CEM56" bind "xirc2ps_cs", "serial_cs" but I have to admit that I was only guessing (comparing with other Xircom entries), and it doesn't work. At boot the error-message "interface 'eth1' not found, device eth1 has different MAC address than expected, ignoring" is generated. BTW, with the Xircom-card in the pcmcia-slot, eth1 (cable-network) fails; with it removed, eth1 works. Perhaps someone can explain how to convert from the 'cardctl'-output to the required 'config'-entry? Also, why some cards need 5 lines of data (like the NSC-card below, for example) and others only need three? card "NSC DP83903-based Ethernet/Modem" version "Multifunction Card", "LAN and Modem 336", "Multifunction" manfid 0x0175, 0x0000 cis "cis/DP83903.dat" bind "pcnet_cs" to 0, "serial_cs" to 1 Many thanks.
