  1. Thanks. /etc/modprobe.conf contains 'alias eth1 eepro100'; when I deleted /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 I was unable to reconnect eth1, so I had to reinstall it using MCC (-> Network&Internet-> Set up new interface). Now eth1 is back, but it still gets reconnected immediately following disconnection.
  2. Nope, that's not it. Eth1 now stays off for about 5 secs, before being re-connected; strange  . Here are the contents of /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1: DEVICE=eth1 BOOTPROTO=dhcp ONBOOT=no HWADDR=00:00:39:4a:74:8d METRIC=10 MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=no USERCTL=yes IPV6INIT=no IPV6TO4INIT=no PEERDNS=yes DHCP_CLIENT=dhclient NEEDHOSTNAME=yes PEERDNS=yes PEERYP=no PEERNTPD=no
  3. I've just updated LE2005 to Mdk2006 (NOT installed) and, although I can disconnect eth1, the system keeps ignoring my command and re-connects it after about 2 seconds. Has anyone else had this problem and solved it; if so, how? Thanks.
  4. Thanks. About 3.5 seconds B) after posting it occurred to me that the man could be called mc, but it was too late. Anyway, most importantly I've been able to change the editor to vi. Thanks again.
  5. I urgently need an instruction-manual for MC, ESPECIALLY for its editor. Can anyone point me to a site, or something? Thanks.
  6. Thanks. The whole purpose of this partition-copy exercise was to update my current LE2005 to 2006 and, because I haven't got a clue anymore how I arrived at 2005's configuration and certainly wouldn't be able to re-configure it, I need a copy in case the upgrade goes wrong (as you imply it could) . I'll give the update a bash; who knows, it may work. ;)
  7. Well, I fixed the problem by 'cheating'. I chainloaded into each partition (except LE2005), where I knew that there was a lilo loader. May not be the prettiest solution, but at least it works. Sometime in the future I'll play around with grub and try to boot directly, but at the moment I'm happy. Thanks to all who helped. timeout 20 default 0 title linux LE2005 kernel (hd0,5)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda8 splash=silent vga=788 initrd (hd0,5)/boot/initrd.img title linux-nonfb kernel (hd0,5)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda8 initrd (hd0,5)/boot/initrd.img title failsafe kernel (hd0,5)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 failsafe acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda8 devfs=nomount initrd (hd0,5)/boot/initrd.img title windows root (hd0,0) chainloader +1 title linux Mdk2006 root (hd0,6) chainloader +1 title linuxLE2005Copy root (hd0,8) chainloader +1 Oh, one final thing. I want to update an existing LE2005 to mva2006; is the latter the one with FREE on the splash-screen? If not, how do I go about updating? Thanks again.
  8. I modified /etc/fstab to the following: /dev/hda6 / ext3 noatime 1 1 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom iso9660 user,iocharset=iso8859-1,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d vfat umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda7 /mnt/mdk2006 ext3 noatime 1 1 /dev/hda9 /mnt/mdk102Copy ext3 noatime 1 1 /dev/hda8 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/hde5 /mnt/pcmciahdd ext3 noatime,user,noauto 0 0 and /boot/grub/menu.lst to: timeout 20 default 0 title linux LE2005 kernel (hd0,5)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda8 splash=silent vga=788 initrd (hd0,5)/boot/initrd.img title linux-nonfb kernel (hd0,5)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda8 initrd (hd0,5)/boot/initrd.img title failsafe kernel (hd0,5)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 failsafe acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda8 devfs=nomount initrd (hd0,5)/boot/initrd.img title windows root (hd0,0) chainloader +1 title linuxMdk2006 kernel (hd0,5)/mnt/mdk2006/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.12-12mdk root=/dev/hda7 initrd (hd0,5)/mnt/mdk2006/boot/initrd.img title linuxLE2005Copy kernel (hd0,5)/mnt/mdk102Copy/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.11-6mdk root=/dev/hda9 initrd (hd0,5)/mnt/mdk102Copy/boot/initrd.img At boot, with linuxLE2005Copy selected in grub, this error message appeared: kernel (hd0,5)/mnt/mdk102Copy/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.11-6mdk root=/dev/hda9 Error 15: File not found similarly, with linuxMdk2006 selected, the message was: kernel (hd0,5)/mnt/mdk2006/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.12-12mdk root=/dev/hda7 Error 15: File not found (BTW, I assumed that your '/mnt/hda7' and '/mnt/hda9' were typos, after boot didn't work the first time) I've checked for these images and the addresses DO appear to be correct. Interestingly enough, immediately following boot of LE2005 (the only one which DOES boot), KDiskFree shows /dev/hda7 as being unmounted. I can then mount it manually. Possibly the fault lies in /etc/fstab? Any further tips? Thanks.
  9. Well, I tried your code and now have a image-copy of LE2005 on a spare partition. Great . Still have a few probs with booting, sadly; perhaps I could trouble you again? The copy-partition previously contained Suse 10 and I used Suse-grub to boot the OS's - Suse 10, LE2005, Mdk2006 and Windoze 2k (oh, the joy in using Suse's grub-config tool :D ). On rebooting LE2005 (and I cannot for the life of me remember how I managed that) I used MCC to put grub back in the MBR. It's now possible to boot LE2005 and LE2005(copy), but not Mdk2006, which hangs with some message about not being able to find the image. Grub's menu.lst is below; can you spot any obvious error? Also, if I were to edit menu.lst, how would I get the result back into the MBR? Thanks. BTW, LE2005 is on hda6, LE2005(copy) on hda9 and Mdk2006 on hda7; swap is on hda8. timeout 20 default 0 title linux LE2005 kernel (hd0,5)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda8 splash=silent vga=788 initrd (hd0,5)/boot/initrd.img title linux-nonfb kernel (hd0,5)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda8 initrd (hd0,5)/boot/initrd.img title failsafe kernel (hd0,5)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 failsafe acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda8 devfs=nomount initrd (hd0,5)/boot/initrd.img title windows root (hd0,0) chainloader +1 title linux Mdk2006 kernel (hd0,5)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.12-12mdk root=/dev/hda7 initrd (hd0,5)/boot/initrd.img title linuxLE2005Copy kernel (hd0,5)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.11-6mdk root=/dev/hda9 initrd (hd0,5)/boot/initrd.img
  10. Many thanks. Before I try the copying, just one daft(?) question: the fact that you've used sda is pure coincidence, isn't it? My partitions are called hda8 and hda9; am not quite sure whether or not the device-type is significant. Hopefully not.
  11. OK, I probably AM asking for the impossible, but I thought I would, anyway ;) . I want to make an exact copy of one linux-partition onto another, either on the same physical HDD or a second one. Seeing how clever linux is, thought there might just be some utility or another to do this. Any tips? Thanks.
  12. Thanks, John and Greg. Sound works well under both snd-intel8x0 and i810_audio, but the microphone doesn't - or, at least, I've not been able to test the latter. To do that I need some sound-recorder or another; the only one I can find is the gnome-sound-recorder but this keeps dying when activated (with 'The Application "gnome-sound-recorder" has quit unexpectedly') . I thought that I'd un-install and then re-install it, but MCC cannot find it under the name 'gnome-sound-recorder' (although its executable is called /usr/bin/gnome-sound-recorder). Any clues on why it dies or what its package-name ACTUALLY may be? Thanks again. Later: Whoooa, all systems to standby. I don't know WTH I've done, but suddenly the mic AND Skype work - cannot imagine anything else except changing the audio-driver to 'snd-intel8x0'. Also, ALSA, which previously crashed in System->Configuration->KDE->Sound->Sound system/Hardware, is now running (MCC->System->Services). Quite amazing  . Trouble is, since I don't know how it happened, I'm scared of changing anything else. Still, big improvement; just need to try to improve the Skype quality, now. Many thanks for all your help.
  13. Thanks John. Don't know what '... Configure hardware' did before, so am uncertain if it worked  . There IS another driver offered, however (snd-intel8x0). Don't suppose you happen to know whether it's any good or not, do you?
  14. It all seemed *far* too simple  . Have installed sndconfig via MCC, but now cannot find an entry in a menu or an icon, anywhere. I HAVE located an executable and a script (in /usr/sbin) but trying to run them has no effect i.e. an entry appears in the task-bar along with the egg-timer, but after about 15 seconds the entry disappears. Mysterious. Any further tips, please?
  15. google is your friend: http://fr.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/mandriva/1...-7mdk.i586.html Yes, I agree; just need to solve the dependency probs, now. Many thanks
  16. I can find RPMs for all other mdk's except 10.2; can anyone help out with a source? Thanks.
  17. I ran the two suggested commands, below is the konsole output; it would appear that alsa cannot be started: [root@localhost ~]# service alsa start [root@localhost ~]# service sound start Loading sound module (i810_audio) [ OK ] Loading mixer settings [ OK ] [root@localhost ~]# I then checked in /var/log/messages for 'alsa' (which returned nothing) and 'sound', which returned the following: Dec 28 10:36:24 nott kernel: i810_audio: Audio Controller supports 6 channels. Dec 28 11:21:06 nott kernel: i810_audio: drain_dac, dma timeout? Sorry to bombard you with all this data, but perhaps it is of some use. Thanks for your help. Later: Well, I'm not quite sure how I did it (apart, perhaps, from changing the sound-driver - see my post 'sndconfig RPM for LE2005') , but the mic is now working. Erstaunlich. Many thanks for all help.
  18. Thanks. I've checked in MCC/system/services: ALSA is stopped, 'on boot' box is selected, when I click 'Start', the message "Alsa driver isn't running" appears. Presumeably this is why I can't find mention of ALSA in any menu, although it IS installed (according to MCC/Software-Management, anyway  ). Any ideas on how to get ALSA running? Thanks again. Afterthought: I've tried modinfo snd and modinfo sound; the results are below [root@localhost ~]# modinfo snd filename: /lib/modules/2.6.11-6mdk/kernel/sound/core/snd.ko.gz author: Jaroslav Kysela <perex@suse.cz> description: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture driver for soundcards. license: GPL parmtype: major:int parm: major:Major # for sound driver. parmtype: cards_limit:int parm: cards_limit:Count of auto-loadable soundcards. parmtype: device_mode:int parm: device_mode:Device file permission mask for devfs. alias: char-major-116-* vermagic: 2.6.11-6mdk 686 gcc-3.4 depends: soundcore [root@localhost ~]# modinfo sound filename: /lib/modules/2.6.11-6mdk/kernel/sound/oss/sound.ko.gz parmtype: dmabuf:int parmtype: dmabug:int license: GPL description: OSS Sound subsystem author: Hannu Savolainen, et al. vermagic: 2.6.11-6mdk 686 gcc-3.4 depends: soundcore This implies that both alsa AND oss are loaded, although alsa is not running. Is this suspicious/normal?
  19. I cannot get any app to read from the mic-input on my laptop; I have not previously used the mic, so it could be faulty  . Is it possible to connect the mic DIRECTLY to the speakers (the latter DO work), to test it? Also, I've just read in a Skype-thread that it is necessary to open port 9443 IRC in the firewall; how do I do that? (and what does IRC mean?) Thanks
  20. Have just installed Skype (thanks, isadora and emmanuel_uk ) and am having problems getting my sound-system to work adequately with it. To start with, I attempted to follow wilcal's advice (post #3 above) but can't find any way of recording with a mic. (Sound Recorder crashes at start with the message: The Application "gnome-sound-recorder" has quit unexpectedly) I then tried to troubleshoot the sound-system using 'Skype Sound and Audio Set-Up', where it says that "in using the OSS I have to enable microphone input in the audio mixer setting": I used kmix for this and noticed that there is no 'Current mixer' line in my kmix. Am I correct in assuming that there's a problem here? If so, can anyone point me in the right direction in trying to solve it? BTW, I haven't been able to find a reference to OSS in any menu. My LE2005 setup runs on a Tosh Satellite Pro 4600, which uses an Intel ICH2 810 Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller Sound-system. Many thanks.
  21. Many thanks. p.s. did you mean Audacity? ;)
  22. Yes, Ian, you were probably correct with the 64 bit suggestion. I downloaded libmp3lame-3.95.1-1.i386.rpm from http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.p...uery=libmp3lame and installed it; Audacity still couldn't find usr/lib/libmp3lame.so, but I forced it to accept usr/lib/libmp3lame.so.0 instead, and now it outputs mp3-files as required. Many thanks.
  23. Am having a few problems with Audacity (or rather, with its .mp3 output). I'm informed - by Audacity - that lib64lame.so is required but cannot be found. A web-search revealed a connection between lib64lame0-3.96.1-1plf.x86_64.rpm and lib64lame.so, so I downloaded and tried to install the former (using rpm -U lib64lame0-3.96.1-1plf.x86_64.rpm) but received the message: error: Failed dependencies: libc.so.6()(64bit) is needed by lib64lame0-3.96.1-1plf libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.2.5)(64bit) is needed by lib64lame0-3.96.1-1plf libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.3)(64bit) is needed by lib64lame0-3.96.1-1plf Another search revealed that libc.so.6 (etc) is/are in glibc-2.3.4-8mdk.i586.rpm, which I downloaded and also tried to install (with rpm -U glibc-2.3.4-8mdk.i586.rpm), only to be informed package glibc-2.3.4-8mdk is already installed Confusing  Can anyone give me a hint on what's going on? I'm using LE2005. Thanks.
  24. When I (try to) install skype into my LE2005 setup, from the source-directory as root, using: rpm -U skype-1.3.0.53-1mdk.i586.rpm I'm given the message: warning: skype-1.3.0.53-1mdk.i586.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID d66b746e Can anyone say if this significant, or can I just ignore it? Thanks.
  25. Thanks for the tip. Sadly I'm now in "dependency-hell" with lame and cannot find the modules to solve this on my LE2005 setup. Will have to find another solution. But thanks again, anyway. :D
