Thanks for the reply, however I am not member of the Mandrake club. Is there an open source for that? BTW, can I become the member of the Mandrakeclub free of charge?

Hi All!
Could somebody explain what is going on when one changes the security level in the Mandrake Security Center? I mean what scripts are executed/how to do that in command line?
Also - I have troules pinging a site and establishing a PPTP VPN connection when my security level is in Standard. Only Poor selection allows for it. How to fix it? IP tables is not installed - what guards this?
Thank you.

Well, it finally worked but in a little bit strange way.
I removed the ndiswrapper and installed the acx100 drivers (http://acx100.sourceforge.net/)/ It was all the same - installed fine, but when time came to ping - "host unreachble". I turned off WEP and turned it on back - nope. I ifuped and ifdoned and on a tenth or twentieth itiration in worked!
I still can not understand why because I didn't do any chages during last 3-5 ifup/ifdown iterations. So now I'll have to understand why it happened and to check if it will still work after reboot.
Thanks for you help.

OK. Removed everything, re-installed everything. The same thing :-(
What I notete however - the PWR light is on, but the data transmission is on ONLY once as the card is detected or when I remove/insert the card. Then I see the PWD led only. BUT, when I remove ndiswrapper from the memory it starts blinking as if it sends data... That's pretty wierd. I can't understand what's up.
-
I built the ndiswrapper from the source using the latest version. I didn't use the version that was shiiped with the distro.
-
Ooops... You are right. It's there ;-( What should I do? Uninstall and do all over again? How to better do that?
-
BTW, when you say you've followed the instructions, did you check the Wiki page for Mandrake and follow the stuff about removing the old, preinstalled version of ndiswrapper? This can be critical depending on what card you have.
Also, what make and model is your router?
Thanks for quck response. I followed the instructions on the Wiki page and I checked the presence of the the ndiswrapper before the installation - and it was NOT installed.
As to the reuter - it is D-Link DI-604, AP - D-Link DWL-900AP+.
I'll try to play without encryption.
P.S. I also would like to note that originally I set 'key restricted XXXX-XXXX-XX' but in that case it even did not recognize the AP (the hw address was 00:00:00.... and SSID was "any")

Hi guys,
I am fighting with mandrake 10.1 and D-Link DWL-650+ on Toshiba laptop. I exactly followed the instructions on the project's site - it compiled and installed successfully. But it doesn't work - no ping - it says "destination host unreachable" - looks like there is a routing problem or what? No firewall is installed.
I assigned IP. but can not ping to my router. Any ideas what I dod wrong? When I look at mandrake's Control Center's Monitor Connections section it says "not connected".
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.
Here are my settings:

Well, I don't use DHCP on the access point... Don't know if it's worth trying.
Well, I'm done here, then.
Thanks for the help anyway!

Try using a dynamic ip also and see if the results are any different. In /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0:
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
and comment out the
IPADDR=
line in there. Then restart the network (you may have to redo your iwconfig commands again).
Well, I don't use DHCP on the access point... Don't know if it's worth trying.

Have you tried pinging the outside world? By name and/or ip.
Sure I did. But I even can not reach nearby computers and my router. Outside world is also unreachable... Pretty strange situation. It seems that something very obvious and simple is missiong but where?
-
So your problem is probably a firewall running on the local computer that doesn't need to be there. Go to mcc -> Security -> Firewall and turn it off.
It is off. I suspect that there is a problem with routing. As minimum I do not see there localhost default entry - so maybe it screwd up. Care to look at the route -n output earlier in my post?
Thanks.
-
Also, notice that before, your essid said "Off/any" and now it says "Netsoul", so it's active and talking to the AP.
You are right - something happened, but I meant that I still can not ping my router or a nearby PC - "destination host unreachable", however al IP settings are OK and I can ping my localhost.

Try as root
iwconfig wlan0 key open <<your key here>>
(might want to edit out your key up there, too, so everyone doesn't see it...sorry i didn't mention it before)
So, I did it but nothing happened:

So what would be an alternative to MDK for home workstation then?
