NAS, Synology or QNAP?

Hi,

In order to improve a bit my network, I d like a piece of hardware able to host an ftp server and carry on downloads or uploads while my station is off. My goal would be only the router on and the piece of hardware.

I had a look and the two which seem to be in my price range are : QNAP TS-101 and the Synology Disk Station DS-101j. There seem to be some compatibility issues with Linux, mainly for the "download replicator" program which helps one to organise the downloads whilst the pc is off.

If anyone has one of these two, please let me know the pros and cons, otherwise any advice on other solutions are welcome. Budget is max £ 150 ($ 306, € 222).

Thanks a bunch!

Stef

WuahahahahAHAHAHahahAHAH,

This is me since I received my QNAP-109 turbostation, marvel of Linux device. 80% Linux compatible I would say, some of the java apps for the download station don t quite work but hey, I ll hack it and they will.

I access it via www or ssh via my linux box or my zaurus and launch downloads which run overnight. The appliance takes less power than a power saving bulb. Totally noiseless.

Very good!

Hi, how hackable the QNAP is?

(some say it's pretty closed, eg http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php...mp;postcount=26 )

Can you install apps/scripts to it? Is there some hacked firmware?

It looks great, just as Synology, Buffalo/KuroBox, or even N2100 (which even runs Debian).

Could you tell me why you chose QNAP?

thanks!

Hi Sorry I was abroad on Hols...

This forum should answer your questions,

I did a lot of searching on the reviews before i chose the QNAP, from the top of my head, the speed of the CPU and RAM are far better than the others, it runs on very little power, totally silent,

http://www.bjorn3d.com/read.php?cID=1137 was the review I looked at I think.

You can Hack it, look at the forum some people have changed the Bittorrent client, also it is pretty new so give a bit of time and some hackers will break it!

I remember hesitating with the Synology but was a bit more money and the DS107 has a fan which I hate...

PS a link there too : http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/Open_Turbostation
