panportok
Hi, I installed Mandriva 2008 1. and I never had sound . My sound card is M-audio 2496 Audiophile. The on board sound chip is disabled from the bios. I am new in linux so I tryied several live distributions (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, suse, dsl,) with no sound problem. I run the bug sound tester and I had the following results :( note that the "grep sound-slot /etc/modules.conf" command gives no response) [root@localhost panagiotis]# lspcidrake -v |fgrep AUDIO snd_ice1712 : VIA Technologies Inc.|ICE1712 [Envy24] PCI Multi-Channel I/O Controller [MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO] (vendor:1412 device:1712 subv:1412 subd:d634) [root@localhost panagiotis]# grep sound-slot adamw
It's likely just a mixer setting issue. Run: alsamixer -c0 and you should see a long set of volume controls for the card (identified as an ice1712) - if not, let us know. Play with the settings. Try and get them the same as under one of the distros that works okay.
panportok
Thank you adamw. The result is: IEC958..........PCM OUT IEC958.1.......PCM OUT ADC...............62 ADC1............71 DAC..............80 DAC1............91 Deemphas.....off HW................PCM OUT I tryied the same command on live CUBUNTU The results: IEC958..........PCM OUT IEC958.1.......PCM OUT ADC..............63 ADC1............63 DAC..............80 DAC1............80 Deemphas.....off HW................PCM OUT
Greg2
The card you're using is not being identified as an ICE1712. Please post the output of grep sound-slot /etc/modprobe.conf not modules.conf, that you tried previously. Also post the output of cat /proc/asound/cards
scarecrow
You could also try installing and using the "envy24control" application, which is part of ALSA (in my distro of choice it's included in some "alsa-tools" package), and looks very much like the windows native M-Audio mixer/tray application. All that said, I did have some issues with my 2496 when I upgraded to kernel 2.6.23+, which weren't easy to fix (factly, I don't even know which one of my recipes fixed the distorted sound problem I had... oh well). For the record, this card is using the "ice1712" module, so maybe "sudo modprobe ice1712" before calling alsaconf or envy24control as root. panportok
[root@localhost panagiotis]# grep sound-slot /etc/modprobe.conf [root@localhost panagiotis]# cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [M2496 ]: ICE1712 - M Audio Audiophile 24/96 M Audio Audiophile 24/96 at 0xdf80, irq 16 As you see there is no responce from command oss-linux-v4.0-1015.i386.rpm. I don't know why the envy24control is already installed. I have tryied also the driver oss-linux-v4.0-1015.i386.rpm (recomanded from the M-Audio )but i have unistalled it later because I was affrayed possible conflicts
Greg2
Is this a USB sound device?
scarecrow
Is this a USB sound device? Nope. It's PCI, and it behaves not 100% predictably on modern PCIE mainboards.
panportok
no it is a PCI device
Greg2
no it is a PCI device OK, then I would suggest that you try adding this line alias sound-slot-0 snd-ice1712 to your /etc/modprobe.conf file. (First, please save a copy of your /etc/modprobe.conf file to another location, in case you make a mistake.) Now you can do that with kdesu kwrite /etc/modprobe.conf add that line, then save. There are other ways to do this, but for now, simply restart your system and see if that works for you. Please let us know?
panportok
The "/etc/modprobe.conf" file is not writable. How can I add the line???
panportok
Finaly i did it. I restarted..... no result. The content of the "/etc/modprobe.conf " file is the following: install ide-controller /sbin/modprobe piix; /sbin/modprobe ide_generic; /bin/true alias ieee1394-controller ohci1394 install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe ehci_hcd; /sbin/modprobe uhci_hcd; /bin/true alias eth0 skge alias sound-slot-0 snd-ice1712 kdesu kwrite /etc/modprobe.conf
Greg2
alias sound-slot-0 snd-ice1712kdesu kwrite /etc/modprobe.conf No, you misunderstood my post. You were to use this command kdesu kwrite /etc/modprobe.conf to open your modprobe.conf file so you could add this line alias sound-slot-0 snd-ice1712 so please remove this line: 'kdesu kwrite /etc/modprobe.conf' from your modprobe.conf file. Do you understand? :) Then please check the output of arecord -l if your sound card is listed as card 0, then do alsamixer -c0 and see if it shows your card in the top left of alsamixer. If it's OK, then adjust the settings accordingly. Go to your menu > tools > system tools > KDE control center > sound and multimedia > hardware > select the audio device, and select: advanced Linux sound architecture. Then click on the general tab and check your sound with the 'test sound' button. Does it work?

scarecrow
How do you alter the sound volume? I'm asking because the 2496 does not have a "master" channel.
