Guest tcreek
I guess Mandrake has fallen bahind the competition. I tried numerous times to install from version 8.0-9.2. All failed without reason given. I finally tried to install Red Hat v9.0 It gave me an indication there is a problem with the drive and install cannot continue. I retried the install again this time formating with checking for bad blocks. Well Mandrake could not do this? What the heck not? so much for easy install. What is worse the Red Hat could do this, but could not/would not fix or mark the bad blocks!! What can I do to fix the problem??? I cannot install no Linux untill they are gone. Maybe with Windoz? Counterspy
Go to the site of the manufacturer of your drive. There you should find a utility that will rescan the drive and clear it, what some call a low level format. Most such utilities do mark bad blocks to be skipped as part of this process. Try this and post back with our results. Counterspy Edited November 27, 2003 by Counterspy
pmpatrick
Having a lot of bad blocks on a drive is a sign it's starting to go. Back up your data now before doing anything else. Then run the diagnostics on the drive using the manufacturer's utility as suggested above. You might want to start shopping around for a new hard drive as well.
Pzatch
What exactly is the error your getting. There are several problems a drive could have with linux that have nothing to do with linux specificly. If all installs failed then its more than likely you have the computer set up wrong for linux. We need the specifics in order to help better.
