kowalsky
Hi All, I'm facing a strange problem after istalling Mandriva 2009.1 on my desktop. It has two Maxtor internal drives and is configured as follow: Hda1 Windoze Hda5 Mandriva 2006 Hdb1 Mandriva 2008.1 Hdb5 Mandriva 2009.1 I've been able to boot almost every system Windoze, Mandriva2006, Mandriva2008 up to now just adding a new stanza in the LILO conf but not the Mandriva2009 partition. The boot starts but at certain point it issues the message 'Waiting for root device to appear' and next I get kernel panic. Here is my lilo.conf # File generated by DrakX/drakboot # WARNING: do not forget to run lilo after modifying this file default="2617-1custom" boot=/dev/hda map=/boot/map keytable=/boot/it-latin1.klt menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw prompt nowarn timeout=100 message=/boot/message image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-1mdkcustom label="2617-1custom" root=/dev/hda5 initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.17-1mdkcustom.img append="resume=/dev/hda6 splash=silent" vga=788 image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-1mdk label="2617-1" root=/dev/hda5 initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.17-1mdk.img append="resume=/dev/hda6 splash=silent" vga=788 image=/mnt/maxtor/boot/vmlinuz label="Mdv2008-1" root=/dev/hdb1 initrd=/mnt/maxtor/boot/initrd.img append="resume=/dev/hda6 splash=silent" vga=788 image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.12-15mdk label="2612-15" root=/dev/hda5 initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.12-15mdk.img append="resume=/dev/hda6 splash=silent" vga=788 image=/boot/vmlinuz label="linux" root=/dev/hda5 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="resume=/dev/hda6 splash=silent" vga=788 image=/boot/vmlinuz label="linux-nonfb" root=/dev/hda5 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="resume=/dev/hda6" image=/boot/vmlinuz label="failsafe" root=/dev/hda5 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="failsafe resume=/dev/hda6" image=/mnt/systest/boot/vmlinuz label="Mdv2009-1" root=/dev/hdb5 initrd=/mnt/systest/boot/initrd.img append="resume=/dev/hda6 splash=silent" vga=788 other=/dev/hda1 label="windows" table=/dev/hda To get the Mandriva2009.1 booting I've started the Mdv2008 image and then created a grub boot floppy able to boot both the Mdv2008 and the Mdv2009 partitions. I cannot replace this loader over the current LILO because up to now using this floppy I cannot boot the Mandriva2006 image :(., receiving a kernel panic on startup. I would prefer continuing to use my old lilo to boot ALL the systems, if possible. Any suggestion? Tks in advance Roberto
kowalsky
Hi All, after dozens of system reboot I've found an acceptable solution to boot all my Mandriva partitions. There is no way, at least up to now for me, to boot a Mandriva 2009 system using the Mandriva 2006 Lilo as loader (my current one). I'm always getting a kernel panic after attempting to load the root device and receiving error 22 at switchroot time. And I've non found a way to boot Mandriva 2006 using the Grub loader in the Mandriva 2009 partition, receiving also a kernel panic message. But the Mandriva 2008 Grub loader works for all the three Mandriva flavours. Only, configuring the menu.lst, I MUST use the root=/dev/hdxy to indicate the Mandriva 2006 root, and the ROOT=UUID=blablabla.... to indicate the 2008 and 2009 root partitions. scarecrow
Apart from the solution you chose, there's another one: reinstalling grub/lilo to your root partition(s), and using a third party primary loader. GAG is a good one.
xboxboy
I had a similar problem when I installed 2008 I think it was. I use grub. In the end I used the boot loader installed with 2008, and modified that rather than modify the existing setup.

I know that I could use other boot loaders like GAG (In the remote part I've also used the OS/2 boot loader to wake up my multiboot desktop/laptop), but this time I was looking for a native linux solution to boot my Mandriva partitions. The matter was only understand if in the next future I should take much more care handling the loader after fresh Mandriva installations, installing the bootloader on a floppy, for example, and test it, before destroying my mbr. Anyway tks again for your reply. I think this thread could be closed now. Roberto p.s. I've got exactly the same problem installing both the Mandriva One 2009.1 Kde and/or the Mandrriva 2009.1 Free DVD Edited September 25, 2009 by kowalsky
