You should know that the package name is either basename, or basename-version; never with the type (src, i586...), nor the .rpm extension. So with rpm -q, you have to know the exact basename; example: rpm -q libdb1-devel In most cases, it is simpler to just use: rpm -qa | grep -i "PartOfName"; example: rpm -qa | grep -i "flash" Yves.
