Red Hat 2Qt. results

Red Hat, Inc. has sent out a press release on its second quarter results: a $240,000 profit on revenue of $29 million. The company has now sold about 26,000 Enterprise Linux subscriptions; subscription income is now worth about five times as much revenue as retail Linux sales.

I think they have the right idea. Service is the way to make money in IT now and in the future. Software is becoming a comodity and only the large volume dealers will make a sustainable profit on the low margins. This is pretty much the IBM business model and open source is ushuring in the new age. I think it's only a matter of time.

With an operating profit of one middle exec's salary, they are getting dangerously close to being seen as a money-maker. They better get their accountants to show more losses...

But seriously, this is good news for a change.
