Strange Random freezes

Hi all,

I'm fairly new to Linux and decided to install Mandrake 9.1.

Everything is OK but I have some strange freezes that come and go completely random. They lock up the pc completely can't login thru ssh, etc...

I thought the problem was my grfx card (ATI Mobility M6) so I've set my X drivers on 'VESA'. The freezes are still there (though not as much as before...)

I've lso tried disabling ACPI (lilo.conf) but that didn't do the trick either (APM is disabled as this laptop doesn't do APM).

I've searched /var/log/messages and found this entry almost everytime bedore I have a lockup:

Sep 17 17:11:55 localhost gconfd (jimmy-3217): starting (version 2.2.0), pid 3217 user 'jimmy'

Sep 17 17:11:56 localhost gconfd (jimmy-3217): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory" to a read-only config source at position 0

Sep 17 17:11:56 localhost gconfd (jimmy-3217): Resolved address "xml:readwrite:/home/jimmy/.gconf" to a writable config source at position 1

Sep 17 17:11:56 localhost gconfd (jimmy-3217): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults" to a read-only config source at position 2

Sep 17 17:17:21 localhost syslogd 1.4.1: restart.

I presume the last line is where I reboot...

Can this be the source of my problems? How do I resolve it then? If it isn't .... what could it be?

Those freezes render my setup useless

Thanks for any help!

Jimmy

Maybe it's locking up every time you open a gnome based program. They usually have a "G" at the beginning of their name. KDE apps usually have a "K". Have you noticed anything like this or is it completely random.

Edit: It might be the screen saver. Just disable it. Check out this link:

From what I can see, there's definitely some issues with this card. Try googling "linux ATI Mobility M6" and click on the Groups tab.

thanks but the screensaver thingy didn't do the trick and it isn't related to starting Gnome or KDE apps.

I've googled a bit myself but really cannot find the problem. I've already matched my X config with those of other people with the same laptop but that isn't the problem either, used a VESA driver and all ...

Kinda weird, maybe if I upgraded the kernel?

I am having the exact same problem , RANDOM lockups

First some things i've noticed..

Its NOT hardware - Windows runs fine for days on end

Its NOT related to x , i get this even at just a console (random lockups can't even ssh in and they go away after long enough wait)

I think it could be related to the nforce drivers , i DO belive though am not sure if the lockups started happening after installing these ,

I installed the drivers almost right after install so i can't tell

It could be the Network adaptor part of the drivers ? not tried disabling that module and seeing if i get lockups yet ?

I have been unable to solve this or find info on google , PLEASE help

running asus a7n-266-vm board

with a athlonxp 1.4ghz

512MB 266mhz crucial memory cas2.5

geforce 4 ti 4400 (leadteck)

everything else is built in to mboard , also using a usb mouse (MX-700)

and usb keyboard

Ok i found out by disableing the loading of my network card that the freeze ups go away , so it must be a problem with the nvnet drivers and mandrake 9.1

anyhelp on hunting this down would be greatful

Could the problem be permissions related? In this I mean, it requires a read-write solution to this file and is unable to update it?

Have you upgraded the bios the latest version available? Or downgrade it to the stable version? I have the same problem with my Epox 8RDA+, I have to upgrade my bios to a certain version so that the X lockup stops. It seems that NVidia driver doesn't like to be put at IRQ above IRQ 10 or something.

I'm running the very latest bios , last i checked , i will check this out and get back to you .

Just puzzles me how i've been unable to find another with this problem though I'm now positive its related to the nvnet module without it loaded i have no problem

Well.. most people here are not NForce2 users.. I think I am one of the inkling few that are actually brave enough to try it :)

Anyway, just in case you cannot find the answer here, why don't you go to this place

http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/

That is a NForce based forum more than linux based forum, but I think you can find many relevant information there. Particularly important place are Nforce Linux and Asus section.

Good luck :)
