9.0 Window size problems, and how to switch KDE>GNOME?

Well I am a bit new at 9.0, I have used Mandrake 6.5 before quite happily,

I've just installed 9.0 on a test system and have one problem, and one question

I can't seem to find the answer on anywhere,

It is a standard install, with KDE chosen.

1. Some of the important utilities, so far Mandrake Control Center

and Mandrake Update, don't even fit in an 800x600 res screen!

They won't even resize down small enough to use the important buttons

along the bottom without tabbing and guessing blind.

Is there a way to fix this without going 1024x768?

Any other tips or hints? I am surprised how these aren't working.

2. For the life of me I can't figure out how to change the default

Window manager (I want to try switching to GNOME), on 6.5 there

was a selector in the Taskbar, can anyone help me with the

easy way of switching, how to, and where it is?

Of course I may not be doing something obvious also...

Thanks very much,

Marc

Sure your screen is set for 800 x 600 ? the control centre isn't that large. In the mean time you can move any app thats open anywhere on the screen by holding down the Alt key , left click and hold down, and move it where ever you want.

To change the default kde to gnome the gui way, go into mdk control centre, boot, boot config, at the bottom right , there is an option to auto start X and choose the login manager.

While your in control centre, check your screen, monitor settings etc

Thanks anon,

I just tried the Alt-left click down and move window, it works and lets me

shove it up far enough to get to the buttons at the bottom, thanks!

I asked this question at the old site first, and there's some more info there, here's a link below and my last answer at the bottom,

I worked out the desktop switch, I'm booting to the command line (info below)

This possible 'virtual' 1024x768 space on a smaller res sounds interesting.

It is 800x600, I've switched res from 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and they all look the right size... I was starting to think maybe MCC fixed on the res it was first run at (1024x768) and now won't let me go smaller...

Thanks M()()tts, I shall try that out.

I just ran it now, and can't see the option there, can you describe it please?

I looked in the XF86Config file also and can't see an entry...

I can answer one of my own questions about how to start KDE or GNOME:

Default: startx

GNOME: startx gnome

KDE: startx kde

I boot to the console so the MCC selection isn't relevant, sorry I should

have mentioned that before.

Has anybody else seen this MCC and MU window size problem in less than 1024x768?

I'm surprised that some of these important setup apps aren't usable in less

than 1024x768, especially MCC that allows a user to change resolutions!

I have a screen size limitation of 640x480 on the server setup I am using...
