jlc
What does your /etc/fstab look like? Did you edit it before you rebooted? Did you start from a stage 1 or 3 build? What kind of file systems did you create for your slices?

jlc
I through some at you. Also, have you been trying to use lilo the whole time or have you tried grub? Did you start from Stage 1,2 or 3 on 1.4 final? What does your /etc/lilo.conf look like? Did you see any errors during the install process? The last but not least, what kind of hardware do you have and what kernel are you emergeing?
Riddler
How would I uninstall lilo in order to emerge grub....I don't know how via commandline
tyme
just emerge grub and then go through the install process for grub. it will overwrite lilo on the boot sector. to unemerge lilo (if you want to) just emerge -C lilo (if memory serves)
