emh
If I take a serial port modem, one that I know works in Linux, and use a Serial-to-USB cable to connect it to a USB port instead, will it still work?
Guest JaseP
That's a good question, and one that I don't really have an answer to. My guess is no, because most USB-to-RS-232 converters use software in addition to the hardware to talk to the converter. If you have the stuff laying around, it wouldn't hurt to try, just point your kppp to the usb port instead of pointing it to /dev/modem... It shouldn't hurt the hardware to try... I tried to look at this same solution for the problem I have, namely that I have one RS-232 and two devices to use it (Modem and Palm m100 series docking cradle), For me, anything less than one specific 3rd party connector dongle wouldn't work. So, I went low-tech and bought an extension cable for in case I want to sync my Palm m105. I may upgrade to the m130 which has a USB docking cradle soon though...
