Grey screen with RealVNC

Hi there I'm a newbie when it comes to Linux so bear with me if I ask stooooooooopid questions :-)

 

I installed RealVNC but when I try to remote control it from a Windoze then I just get a grey box.

 

Is there anyone that can help me getting RealVNC running on Mandrake 9.1?

I have a few questions for you regarding your problem with VNC.

 

1)Are you trying to control it from a browser (http://MandrakeBoxIP:580X) or from the VNC viewer itself?

2)The gray screen you are talking about, does it appear after you entered the password?

3)Are you at least prompt to enter a password from the windows machine?

4)What do you enter in the vncviewer windows to connect to the mandrake box?

5)Are you sure the server is running on the Mandrake box?

1. It from the Windows viewer

2. Yup after the password

I use RealVNC on 6-7 Windows-machines without problems and I assume that it will run the same way on Linux

it's not starting your DE....there is a configuration problem somewhere and your desktop environment (KDE or GNOME) or your window manager (fluxbox, windowmaker...others) is not set up right....

 

if i worked more with VNC i could give you better directions, but hopefully this will either send you in the right direction or tip off someone else how knows how to fix it ;-)

ok .. you are left in a X environment .. but this is cheap like hell man!

 

Why did you install RealVNC in Mandrake? I suggest you to uninstall this (RealVNC) and install TightVNC. This program works great with MDK I promess...

 

urpme realvnc

urpmi tightvnc

 

Then you have to start the server on the MDK box as follow

 

vncserver :1

password [enter your password here]

password [enter your password here]

 

Which desktop are you running on MDK? (Gnome, KDE, Flux, ect..)

dont know if ur still having problems, but this is what I had to do.

Im using tightvnc which came pre installed on MD 9.0, but I had the

same problem as you. When you first run "vncserver" from the

command line it asks you to specify a password for client connections.

After it completes you have a ".vnc" folder in your home directory.

Yes you do have to do a ls -A to see this since it is hidden. Anyway, use

your favorite editor, eg:

vi ~/.vnc/xstartup

and edit the xstartup file in this new folder.

untouched the file has a line at the bottom like this:

"twm &"

What is that? It's that bare bones X session you saw when you vnc'd in.

What I did was to comment that out by making it look like this:

"# twm &" - mind you without the quotes

Then I followed up by adding the following line..

exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

What is that? It's the file that the "startx" command locates on my computer (and likely yours also) to start up your window manager.

I figured this out by reading through the /usr/X11R6/bin/startx script and seeing what it was doing. No, I am hardly a coder, but enough to do that. There are a couple of other places it might look to know what to do when you call the startx command, but that was the first one I found.

 

Basically what this does is tell the vncserver to look in the normal place the computer looks when you sign on locally for a window manager.

I got it to work :D

 

I reinstalled Mandrake and included the rfbdrake and now it works perfectly.

Now if Delta Force Black Hawk Down would run on linux then I would install Mandrake at home too.
