Well here's what I did.

I was going to use Part Magic but i didn't need to.

Everything was backed up to a USB 40gb hdd.

Inserted XP disc in drive, booted from it and I was very surprised that it offered to maker partitions. So i used its partition maker, one NTFS and left the last 10gb empty.

Windows installed fine and i up and working.

Next Mandrake. I installed 9.1 in the end.

Everything works sweet EXCEPT USB, winmodem (what do i expect? lol) and he's a little short in the software department.

None of the USB works at all. His USB mouse didn't even work during the install so we moved it into PS/2. So he can't print or scan.

Internet? I'll probably lend him my old external modem.

Software? I'm downloading HEAPs of RPMs (and *groan* deps) for him.

He has a burner which I haven't tested yet. As with the DVD

I'm starting a new thread for the USB. I think it's because his Mobo is a pretty recent MSI with USB2.

He's joining here soon too.

Thanks!

James
