Guest fjortiz
Hi, I'm new to Linux and I'm considering getting Mandrake. I have a Dell Ispiron 600m laptop. Has anybody successfully installed the latest version of Mandrake in a 600m? Thanks! :D
liquidzoo
I believe you made this post in the Hardware section already, but I do agree that the Laptop section is probably a better place for it. I see no reason why Mandrake wouldn't work on the 600m. I have an Inspiron 8200 that is running ML 9.1 quite nicely. Some notes on the architecture, from the dell website: I have no experience with ATI video cards, I have only and probably will only own NVidia cards (personal choice, let's not start a war over this) but I hear that the ATI cards work under Linux, and I know there are Linux drivers available; just don't know how to install them. The Centrino processors are nice. I have a friend that has a Gateway laptop that has a Centrino and I'm more impressed with it than I am with my P4. I'm a little curious how well the built in wireless works. If you are currently using it and do decide to go Mandrake, please let us all know how it works. Other than that, everything looks standard. You should be able to get it working quite nicely. As I said in your previous thread, I would be glad to help you out with any questions you may have on your journey into Linux on that particular laptop. SoulSe
Lucky for you, I have time today  Check it out: http://www.guilds.net/machines/600m/ The info refers to Debian Linux, but the principles should be the same for Mandrake... muffhead
I have 9.2 on my 600m. The ATI drivers that the installer chooses work perfectly. The installer chooses the wrong drivers for sound, you should use the i810 drivers. The nic works fine. If you have a dell true mobile that is based on the broadcom chipset (1300, 1400), just save yourself time and shoot yourself in the head. Or try www.linuxant.com it has a program that uses a wrapper for the windows drivers. I havn't tried it myself. Also, here is the kicker and I havn't figured this out yet, when you close the lid on your 600m, everything will freeze, mouse, sound, video... there is no return from it. I have no idea what is happening with that, that never happend with 9.1. Anybody have any ideas?
coverup
Looks like a problem with X... Could this be of any help? http://www.entrelacs.net/home/linux/D600.html Also, check www.tuxmobile.org, you may find an answer. I am ordering D600 and am going to put MDK 9.2 on it...
