Steve Scrimpshire
(It's the same slow loading of apps in Gnome or KDE) I'm using 9.1 with an alternate kernel that I compiled with gcc-2.95 because of a module that I have that uses objects compiled with gcc-2.95. You can see exactly what I'm referring to here: http://mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=5464 Alot of other complaints here: http://mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=5483 Some of which are cleared up. That was for background. I use GDM to launch my desktop if that matters. Here's some examples: The first time I click the 'Start' button, it takes about five seconds before the menus come up (same thing for right-click on the desktop). Any subsequent openings of the menus are instantaneous. Trying to run Netscape 7, it takes about 30 seconds for it to come up. Running it from the terminal gives no errors, nor are there errors in ~/.xsession-errors related to it. There are errors relating to starting of IceWM in there, though (maybe it's shutdown of IceWM, but it looks like startup to me): IceWM: using /home/omar/.icewm for private configuration files IceWM: Bad option: ShapesProtectClientWindow IceWM: Bad option: AllowFullscreen IceWM: Bad option: QuickSwitchGroupWorkspaces IceWM: Bad option: ShowProgramsMenu IceWM: Bad option: ShowRun IceWM: Bad option: ShowLogoutSubMenu IceWM: Bad option: ShowWindowList IceWM: Bad option: ShowAbout IceWM: Bad option: Gradients IceWM: Bad option: ModSuperIsCtrlAlt IceWM: Bad option: DlgCornerSizeX IceWM: Bad option: DlgCornerSizeY IceWM: using /home/omar/.icewm for private configuration files IceWM: Bad option: ShapesProtectClientWindow IceWM: Bad option: AllowFullscreen IceWM: Bad option: QuickSwitchGroupWorkspaces IceWM: Bad option: ShowProgramsMenu IceWM: Bad option: ShowRun IceWM: Bad option: ShowLogoutSubMenu IceWM: Bad option: ShowWindowList IceWM: Bad option: ShowAbout IceWM: Bad option: Gradients IceWM: Bad option: ModSuperIsCtrlAlt IceWM: using /home/omar/.icewm for private configuration files IceWM: Bad option: ShapesProtectClientWindow IceWM: Bad option: AllowFullscreen IceWM: Bad option: QuickSwitchGroupWorkspaces IceWM: Bad option: ShowProgramsMenu IceWM: Bad option: ShowRun IceWM: Bad option: ShowLogoutSubMenu IceWM: Bad option: ShowWindowList IceWM: Bad option: ShowAbout IceWM: Bad option: Gradients IceWM: Bad option: ModSuperIsCtrlAlt IceWM: Bad option: ShowXButton IceWM: using /home/omar/.icewm for private configuration files IceWM: Bad option: ShapesProtectClientWindow IceWM: Bad option: AllowFullscreen IceWM: Bad option: QuickSwitchGroupWorkspaces IceWM: Bad option: ShowProgramsMenu IceWM: Bad option: ShowRun IceWM: Bad option: ShowLogoutSubMenu IceWM: Bad option: ShowWindowList IceWM: Bad option: ShowAbout IceWM: Bad option: Gradients IceWM: Bad option: ModSuperIsCtrlAlt IceWM: using /home/omar/.icewm for private configuration files IceWM: Bad option: ShapesProtectClientWindow IceWM: Bad option: AllowFullscreen IceWM: Bad option: QuickSwitchGroupWorkspaces IceWM: Bad option: ShowProgramsMenu IceWM: Bad option: ShowRun IceWM: Bad option: ShowLogoutSubMenu IceWM: Bad option: ShowWindowList IceWM: Bad option: ShowAbout IceWM: Bad option: Gradients IceWM: Bad option: ModSuperIsCtrlAlt IceWM: Bad option: TitleButtonSupported IceWM: using /home/omar/.icewm for private configuration files IceWM: Bad option: ShapesProtectClientWindow IceWM: Bad option: AllowFullscreen IceWM: Bad option: QuickSwitchGroupWorkspaces IceWM: Bad option: ShowProgramsMenu IceWM: Bad option: ShowRun IceWM: Bad option: ShowLogoutSubMenu IceWM: Bad option: ShowWindowList IceWM: Bad option: ShowAbout IceWM: Bad option: Gradients IceWM: Bad option: ModSuperIsCtrlAlt IceWM: Bad option: ShowXButton Some apps like The GIMP start quickly. I use IceWMCP for tweaking stuff. Any ideas or do you need more info? NVidia using the latest 4363 driver compiled also with gcc-2.95. tyme
i experience the issue w/my web browser (mozilla firebird-mozilla based like yours) and i believe it simply takes a bit the first time because its loading some stuff into memory. this is only done once per session. that's how i understand it, that is-it's part of the way the kernel handles memory. Steve Scrimpshire
I understand that, but I never had this problem before. We're talking about 30 seconds or so. Also, Netscape was just an example. kppp does it, too. I'm thinking it might have something to do with GTK?
