[SOLVED] Audio plays too fast and cuts out

I just installed Mandriva 2008 with KDE desktop on a Compaq N410c laptop. I want to play DVDs so I added many of the multimedia items recommended at:

"The Perfect Desktop - Mandriva 2008 Free (Mandriva 2008.0)"

http://www.howtoforge.com/the_perfect_desk...mandriva_2008.0

The problem:

When playing DVDs with Kaffeine the sound plays a bit too fast and is somewhat high pitched. Every few seconds the sound cuts out for a split second, apparently it does this so that video can catch up to the sound. VLC Media Player gives similar result although the sound cuts out at a faster rate than when using Kaffeine. Both Mplayer and LinDVD play sound and video too fast, however the sound does not cut out.

I am not sure about the ATA driver. I installed from the 2008.0 Powerpack DVD but didn't do anything special about the video driver. When installing from the DVD I also gave it one supplemental online source for packages, in case there was a newer version of some packages since the DVD was made. After installation I updated all packages to latest versions and added (mostly from plf) libdvdcss2 and win32-codes and other multimedia stuff. I never tested playing DVDs until the end.

The computer has 512mb RAM. Unless someone has a better idea, I plan to reinstall from the CD version and test play some DVDs at various points along the way.

In fact the installed version and the live CD version of xorg.conf (when running on this computer) are the same in that section, as copied below.

Section "Device"

Identifier "device1"

VendorName "ATI Technologies Inc"

BoardName "ATI Radeon 9250 and earlier"

Driver "ati"

Option "DPMS"

Option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps" "1"

EndSection

Kaffeine on the live CD plays an unencrypted DVD iso without issues, but audio cuts out and is too high pitched when playing with the currently installed Kaffeine.

The xorg configuration is OK, although you may wish to try the non-free driver as well.

For the breaks in sound,

1. upgrade the bIOS to revision F.0A, if you haven't done so already

2. disable artsd from the KDE sound settings, and run under a console

amixer set 'PC Speaker' on

Another thing you should check is if your combo drive uses DMA or not. Open a root console, and

sdparm -a /dev/sdc

(I'm assuming your drive is /dev/sdc, if not change it accordingly).
