Suse ftp install

Recommended Posts

Has anyone successfully done this? I'm getting nowhere fast trying to ftp install suse 8.2. Here's what I've done:

1.Downloaded and burned the suse iso boot cd;

2.Booted off the cd and loaded my network card module;

3.Choose ftp install and selected dhcp anonymous log in;

4. Greeted with a demand to enter the ftp IP address;

5.Rebooted to Mandrake and pinged the suse ftp site(ftp.suse.com);

6.Got an IP of 217.9.113.66;

7.Repeated steps 2-4 and entered the above address when prompted to do so;

8.Hung up several times with "trying to connect to ftp server";

9.Finally get through and am prompted to select a directory;

10.Select /pub/suse/i386/8.2/;

11.Get dumped back to the "Start Installation/System" screen where everything freezes;

12.Wait a long time with nothing being downloade(NIC isn't flashing);

13.Repeat several times with same results;

14.Give up.

Am I doing something wrong or is the server just swamped?

The last time I tryed this I got hung up at the same spot, and it's something really stupid,

10.Select /pub/suse/i386/8.2/;

like 'suse' or something that you don't expect, out of frustration I repeated that step many times like trying to crack a password, and it 'hooked' up on something totally unexpected like 'suse'.

Generally after that, I just went to the 'Future Shop' and bought the box.

I got it to work using a different mirror at:

http://mirror.usu.edu

The IP address is:

129.123.104.10

Select http and enter the above address when prompted. When asked for a directory enter the following:

/mirrors/suse/i386/8.2/

This mirror is fast; downloaded nearly 3GB in less than 2 hours. Gave my cable modem a serious workout. The suse lilo gave me a string of 9s when I rebooted so I reinstalled Mdk lilo from install CD1 rescue mode, rebooted into Mandrake, edited fstab for the suse partiton and mounted it and saw everything was installed, edited lilo.conf to create a suse entry through /mnt/<mountpoint of suse partition>/boot/<seperate entries for vmlinuz and initrd> and set the root for /dev/hdx (x=number corresponding to suse partition), provided for scsi emulation and devfs on the append line, ran lilo -v when done editing and it worked. I was able to boot into suse.

They sure don't make it easy.

DO NOT use the officially suse server even if you live in germany and it's right across the street. What i did was traceroute all the mirrors and used the one closest to me.
