I have an xp iso lying around here somewhere and don't want to waste a cd on it. Anyone knows if there's a way to get vmware to detect it when it's mounted so that i get to install XP?

Yes, very easy. In the configuration of you vmware machine, you can point the cdrom device to an iso in stead of /dev/cdrom. It's all in there. Just take a look.
