Actually no need to bother replying to that because the -w switch doesn't seem to make any difference to the way it behaves. No matter at least I have learnt how to connect with it, though why the Vodafone modem should be more problematic than the 3 mobile modem is a mystery to me, they are virtually the same thing although they are manufactured by different companies so there must be some difference in the 3 mobile one that suits Mandriva.
