Is fam installed, and set to run at boot along with portmap and xinetd?

does /etc/xinetd.d/fam look like this?

# default: on

# description: FAM is a file monitoring daemon. It can # be used to get reports when files change.

service sgi_fam

{

   disable             = no

   type                = RPC UNLISTED

   rpc_version         = 2

   rpc_number          = 391002

   socket_type         = stream

   protocol            = tcp

   wait                = yes

   user                = root

group    = nogroup

   server              = /usr/bin/fam

bind    = 127.0.0.1

}

does this have anything to do with the messages i m getting of

"martian source ..." ?

No, it's normal that you can't start it because it's an xinetd service. It waits to be called by a program that needs it.

Where are you getting the message and do you know what program is trying to access fam through libwrap? If everything seems to be working ok I wouldn't worry about it. Some programs call fam when changes are made as a means to record the changes. Useless IMO, unless you're in devel. Nautilus and Gedit require fam as I'm sure others do but most will still run without it. Nautilus and Gedit won't even start if they can't connect to fam IF you're online (at least, that was the case in ML9.0).
