Emacs as a programming IDE

My old C++ professor used to swear by emacs. He would have it open in split-screen, with a source code file in one half and a shell in the other. I on the other hand was never comfortable using it. I stick to good old vi, and ctrl-z to pause it and run a command, fg to go back to vi. Never had a problem with that approach.
