HAL Daemon died - how do we reset?

Seems my HAL Daemon has died, and doesn't want to be resurrected.

Cannot access any files via CDROM drive. for a while, anything that I tried to access in the CDROM drive came back with a message "Can only be accessed by HAL.

What I believed triggered this:

Received a series of CD's from the Walmart Photo store. When I tried to view the pictures, I couldn't get access to the CD via Konqueror. After this point, HAL wouldn't allow any access to the CDROM drive.

As of today, the HAL Daemon is stopped, and will not restart. K3B will not work, and locks up solid, requiring a process termination. Haven't bothered with USB thumbdrives. If the CDROM ain't working, we need to start there.

How do we reset HAL Daemon??

Mandriva Free Spring 2007 64 bit

Dell Precision 470 Single Xeon Processor

Damned slow dialup - lets keep downloads to a minimum.
