ramfree17
it seems this fits better here... Im working at a Win2k and NTFS only office and I need to reblast (restore from image) a couple of workstations for deployment. The problem is that the main tech group is having difficulty creating a new norton ghost image of the updated workstation configuration. So i had these idea. IDEA: boot the model pc using knoppix, create an image of the whole harddrive (and i mean the whole since repartitioning isnt allowed, dont ask me why), and write the partition to a shared folder in the network (actually my workstation). If im successful at that then i would just reverse the process to do the other workstations. Questions: 1) Does partimage really work with creating an image of a NTFS drive? My knoppix is one version older than the current release. 2) If i need to update partimage to do this, how do i do this without downloading the new knoppix? im on dialup at home and i need to do this on monday. 3) Will i encounter problems writing to a shared folder which I hope to connect to using samba? How about reading it to do the blasting? 4) Any problem that i missed out? ciao!
pmpatrick
NTFS support in partimage is described as experimental. I recall another thread on this board where this issue was discussed at length. Try doing a search; I'm sure it's here somewhere. Here's a link to the knoppix forum that discusses accessing samba shares with knoppix: http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/FaqSambaQuick It looks like it should be possible if you can get partimage to work with NTFS and it sounds like a totally cool thing to try. Good luck.

Counterspy
That is a rather ingenious method of using Knoppix and Partimage. We anxiously await the results of your experiment. Counterspy

ramfree17
The results are in: its a dismal FAILURE! and no, its not a partimage/ntfs problem. the problem is that knoppix cant detect the lan card of the dell optiflex gx260. my colleague said he was able to install solaris in a similar machine but wasnt able to detect the lancard as well. *grumble, grumble*. :( ciao!
