Problems with dual booting Mandriva One Spring2007

Hi... I am new to installing/using Linux distributions and would like to create a dual boot system. Since I have Windows XP Home already installed using the entire hard drive I did not expect it to be easy to properly partition the disc. Right now the error that I cannot get past is:

 

Partitioning failed: ntfsresize failed:

ERROR: This software has detected that the disk has.

 

I have constantly rebooted Windows and ran multiple defrags and 'chkdsk /f' while restarting the computer in between to make whatever fixes were necessary and nothing seems to be getting rid of that error.

 

Any advice (that a new user could understand) would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to joining the community.

Hi Mediocrates, welcome,

 

in some cases it is necessary to do the following.

 

In Win XP

* disable the use of the 'Restore Files" (or something like that)

* disable the use of a paging file, virtual memory

* make a general cleanup, incl. old restore points

 

Then you need to reboot, start with F8 (is it called secure mode?), and run the defrag again.

Set the GUI that you can see where the files are physically stored. You need enough room at the end (right side) of the partition.

 

(Later on you can enable back the virtual memory and restoring mode in XP)

 

The ntfsresize program need empty room at the end to allocate the space.

 

Then you can start the installation. You can btw do a resize before the installation process.

When you are running Mandriva One, start the Mandriva Control Center (menu: Configure your computer), go to: Mount point and ...
