Mandriva 2007 freezes! [Solved]

Hello,

I am installing mandriva 2007 pwp. I had problems with the display (geforce fx 5600xt) and I think it was because I installed leaving my /home directory intact. Now, it looks great :D

Unfortunately, I have strange freezes (I need to hard reset, ctrl+alt+bckspace is doing nothing).

I looked at the memory, tried to load linux with noapic, no plugandplay in the bios... but with no results.

The worse situation is then I try to load KDE: I can't even go to the desktop. Gnome and IceWM are a little better, I can work a little but after a while .... :wall:

Note that when it freezes, the mouse is moving ok but everything else is out.

Any Help Appreciated, I will open a new thread for that problem.

Try this. Boot the system, then before you log into the system, press CTRL-ALT-F1. This will give you a console prompt. Login as "root" with the password you supplied during install.

Once logged in, do:

service dm stop

this will stop the current X session. Now, hopefully, we have a bit of time using the console to check out the log files, and see if there is anything in there that looks like is causing the problem. Try:

less /var/log/messages

you'll have to scroll towards the bottom of the file, and then work your way back up and see if anything looks bad in there. We can also look at disabling some services as well. Post a list of this command:

chkconfig --list | grep :on

and then I can tell you what to disable.

I am not near my pc now and will post back asap. I looked already to /var/log/messages and didn't notice anything strange; I also tried to stop some unnecessary service but without any success.

Anyway, I will post all this to bee looked by an expert eye!

Just close and don't use mdkapplet, it's broken anyway. The rest I'm not sure about, it's in French, perhaps gowator here can help out, he speaks French so hope he sees this.

You seem to have very few services on your system, which surprises me. Anyway, avahi-daemon can be safely disabled.

I'm just wondering why you have so many services disabled. Especially the "dm" service, as this is what controls the X server.

Here is an idea of what you should have enabled on your system if it was a good install of Mandriva 2007:

if you've hardly got any of this, then I'm wondering if your install is corrupt and why you're experiencing so many problems. You might not have laptop-mode if you're not using a laptop, but the rest is normally there by default. Of course, you could have disabled a lot of services, and probably a lot of very important ones causing your problems.

How do I stop in a safe manner mdkapplet ?

I just desinstalled mdkonline

but I still have freezing:

I can log via kdm with icewm, kde never opens...

I might be tempted to upgrade your kernel. Boot your system normally, then do ctrl-alt-f1 to get a console.

Login as root, then do:

service dm stop

then do:

urpmi kernel-2.6.17.6mdv

as there is a new kernel out now. Might help solve it perhaps.

Thank you for your help Ian,

In fact, the problem came from my nvidia driver and my geforce fx 5600xt. I have installed the more recent one (9629) (from a plf nonfree backport source). It was more stable but I was stuck in 800x600 (I have an iiyama prolite e430t with a max resolution of 1024x768@75Hz). The problem is that there is not a good communication with my monitor (it's what I suppose...) -> the EDID (Extended Dysplay Identification) is not correct. Then , the resolution is set to the minimum. To change that:

1. configure correctly your screen (via mcc)

2. add : Option "UseEDID" "false" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

3. reboot

The resolution is correct now ;)

ps: I just can't get rid of nvidia-kernel-2.6.17-5mdv-8774-1mdk

I think the problem is that you downloaded the new kernel but did not also download and install its matching ...kernel-source.

Do that and then reinstall your nvidia video driver and you should have no problems.

As the kernel-source stripped was already installed, I installed also the corresponding kernel-source; reinstall the nvidia driver but it's just as before :wall:

You can remove it using the noscript function with urpme.

urpme --noscripts packagename

replace packagename with the nvidia stuff you're trying to remove that is old and unrequired. I did this, and works fine for me :P
