USB modem not working (Netcomm roadster II)

Hi,

Im a total n00b when it comes to linux so I need some help.

Installed Mandrake 9 and got everything working with the exception of a Netcomm Roadster II USB rev3.

Have tried to configure it as many ways as I could see but still no luck.

On bootup I get the power and terminal ready LED's lit up.

Got as far as "connecting to and initializing modem" but it just hangs at that point.

settings are /dev/tty s0 and flow control xon/xoff.

Any other settings I tried doesnt even get that far.

Can anyone supply some clues as to what to do.The reward in helping me to get this modem to work under linux will be the satisfaction in knowing that you have got me off winblows permanently

similar problems here but i have a supramax 56k usb modem and the general advice is to ditch the usb modem and buy a PCI modem.

sounds quite final doesn't it

but take heart from the success you have had with your modem cos i get no lights on mine whatsoever. try plugging it into the different usb ports to ensure that you have configured the right device. let me know how you got on .

Did you check to see if your particular brand of modem is supported?

I'd do that before doing anything drastic. Theres a link to the hardware database on the Mandrake Linux homepage. Even if it isn't mentioned at all doen't mean it won't work.

I don't know much about this particular subject, but I don't know that buying a PCI modem is the answer there are many problems with PCI modems as well. They are often called winmodems because they rely on windows and aren't proper modems at all!

yes true there are problems with pretty much any modem. but i have been seeking a solution to my problem of usb modems not working on many forums and most replies state what i have already said and your also right in that most pci modems are winmodems but not all there are resources available to check the compatibility of modems.

try this one http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html

hope it helps

Interesting info here:

http://www.linux-usb.org/USB-guide/x332.html

and here:

http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdev.php?id=52

This page seems reassuring as well:

And finally this (german, but not hard to understand, especially the commands to run at konsole as root):
