pmpatrick
Try disabling the aRts sound server per my prior post: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=3204

pmpatrick
You won't get the system sounds but everything else will be alright. Just shut it down myself and played xmms fine. It's not a big deal though. If your sound is really screwed up, just go back in and turn it back on by ticking the box and hitting the apply button. I know there are a lot of people that really hate aRts and recommend shutting it off permanently. Don't really know that much about it myself except that it can cause some compatability problems. Falcdragon
Or else download the arts program if you got the plf version. If you compiled from source installed the libarts development packages and run ./configure again if it if arts is then listed in the active audio pluggins compile it and you'll have the arts plugin for mplayer allowing you to play sound with out shutting down the sound server.
