enabling usb service to start [solved]

Using webmin remotely to access my box and noticed that the usb service is not initialized.

Action Start at boot? Description

usb No This startup script try to load your modules for your usb devices.

So I used the options available to start it as well as have it to start on boot.

Executing /etc/rc.d/init.d/usb start ..

Initializing USB controller (usb-uhci): [ OK

When I save and exit back to the services menu it again appears with the same info as above.

Can someone tell me why?

Is it because I do not have a usb device connected in the port yet?

(Planning on placing my bluetooth device in that port ...DBT-120 PersonalAir Wireless USB Bluetooth Adapter)

Also I am looking for the drivers for this device. Does anyone know where I can get them from, since Dlink does not offer linux or unix support for it?

Also I am having the exact same issue with MySql service too.

After a reboot you should see something like the following in boot.log

Jan 2 08:18:13 192 usb: Initializing USB controller (uhci-hcd): succeeded

Jan 2 08:18:13 192 usb: Mount USB filesystem succeeded

What do you see?

You do not need to have a usb device installed.

no I did not reboot today, I am logged in remotely at the moment working on my apache but soon will be storing stuff in my db.

I will reboot and post my findings in a moment.

No usb devices currently installed yet since I need to look for the drivers.

The bloothdevice does not come with drivers and I also want to install a printer and share it, but there are no lexmark z515 drivers for linux either. there is something that is compatible but I am not sure if I want to test it.

Also on top of that I may have only 1 usb port (can't tell now cuz i am not at my box physically), and if so then I may have to install my usb port hub and there are no drivers for that either.

ok, after the reboot this is what I get,

MySql

Mar 30 03:50:34 linuxbox mysql: succeeded

Mar 30 04:03:13 linuxbox : - /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

Mar 31 04:04:15 linuxbox : - No longer present writable file : /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

Apr 7 04:13:57 linuxbox mysql: succeeded

Apr 7 09:25:31 linuxbox mysql: succeeded

Apr 7 19:50:25 linuxbox mysql: succeeded

Apr 7 20:51:46 linuxbox mysql: succeeded

USB

Apr 7 20:53:17 linuxbox usb: Initializing USB controller (usb-uhci): succeeded

Apr 7 20:53:17 linuxbox usb: Mount USB filesystem succeeded

So to me it all appears fine. But I still get a no in the boot and services section in my webmin.

When I go to services in webmin I get this msg:

Click this button to start the MySQL database server on your system with the command /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql start. This Webmin module cannot administer the database until it is started.

Did a little more probing and found out that webmin is stating that I am missing a cnf file for mysql

msg is:

The MySQL configuration file /etc/my.cnf was not found on your system. You may need to adjust the module configuration to use the correct path.

I found this msg when I chose to start practicing with php and mysql.

went in to the Mysql server configuration option and this was what appeared.

I then went to the file manager and manually went to the folder and looked for the file including a locate command and neither was found. If I find this file on another system, can I copy it over to this directory without hurting my system? Or do I need to reinstall mysql in order to get this file generated?

well for whatever it is worth the webmin just wont list the services as started or set it to auto start even though they do.

Going to close this chat since this issue appears to be isolated to only one of my boxes.

thanks for the help ppl! Appreciated!
