payasam
These services are set to start on boot, but I always find them stopped: - iptables (though shorewall is OK) - alsa (though sound is OK) - rawdevices (can't really see any use for the thing) AC 97. Any way to set them right? [edit] Oops, sorry. MDV 2006. [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
daniewicz
Iptables is a kernel module, and shorewall sends iptables commands directly to the kernel, so iptable (the service) shouldn't be running. If alsa is not running perhaps your soundcard is using the OSS driver instead? I am not running the rawdevices service either (Mandriva 2005). payasam
OK, Daniewicz, so I turn off iptables and rawdevices and try to figure out what the sound card is doing? Thanks.
iphitus
on most distros, the alsa service runs at boot, loads up the volume from the last boot and ends. it doesnt run constantly. James
payasam
If that's what it does in MDV 2006, James, then I'm probably in the clear. Should also explain why it doesn't obey the "start" command.
ianw1974
I've seen it do that before, you try to start it and it doesn't do what you expect it to. Just leave as it is and forget about it. Nothing to worry about.
payasam
Ah, Ian, there you are. I knew the monkey must be lurking somewhere. What you say is a relief; though it does make one nervous when things don't do what they're meant to do or what they pretend to be there for. When you dont know what the service does, use the force, Luke, I mean, read the source... You can even execute every command on a script by hand and see what happens (or not), and "man" each command (like "man alsactl") to go deeper... Try...
