gcc 2.96 'cannot exec cpp0' when compiling xmame

I am trying to compile xmame from source on MDK8.2. I have done it before, but I currently have files from both gcc 2.96 and 3.0 on my PC, including gcc-cpp 3.0. I can't install version 2.96 of gcc-cpp, and I think it is needed for the compile. I have tried to uninstall gcc-cpp 3.0 with the software manager, but it doesn't really disappear, and I can't replace it with the earlier version.

Is there a way I can get rid of all the version 3.0 gcc files and replace them with 2.96, or can I get this to compile with version 3.0? I have searched on google for help but couldn't find anything. Your help is appreciated.
