k3b DVD writing very slow [solved]

I just upgraded my Mandriva 2006 system to kernel 2.6.12-15 and now DVD writing with k3b is really slow: 0.30x speed! Other posts suggest this problem is due to DMA being turned off. Doing "grep DMA /var/log/messages" shows

Jan 31 07:59:55 simba kernel: hdc: DMA timeout retry

Jan 31 07:59:55 simba kernel: hdc: timeout waiting for DMA

which I think indicates that indeed DMA is not being used (/dev/hdc is my DVD writer). However hdparm says DMA is on:

hdparm /dev/hdc

/dev/hdc:

IO_support = 0 (default 16-bit)

unmaskirq = 0 (off)

using_dma = 1 (on)

keepsettings = 0 (off)

readonly = 0 (off)

readahead = 256 (on)

HDIO_GETGEO failed: Invalid argument

Any ideas how to fix this problem? Previously I had been able to write DVDs at a decent speed (4x) so I do not think this is an intrinsic drive problem.

I have "fixed" my problem by reverting to kernel 2.6.12-12 (had been using 2.6.12-15).

I conclude that the newer kernel has some error whereby it turns DMA off on the drive.

I have reported this Mandriva. Anyway, with the older kernel I can write DVD at normal speeds. I do have a /dev/hdd disk (a CDROM burner) , but its not clear that is relevant.
