getting mail() working in PHP

I thought I'd give this problem a try again.

Here's the nickle tour:

I'm running Mandrake 10.0, PHP5 - compiled from source, sendmail installed via RPM and the PHP mail() function doesn't work. Undefined function error. I'd appreciate any assistance.

To add a bit, sendmail works, I can interact with it from the command line. But, when I looked at the compiler.txt for PHP the PHP compile I found the following -- "checking for sendmail... no" -- which I take to mean the compiler couldn't find sendmail.

I did run across one site that said their was a problem with autoconf that caused sendmail to not be found even if it was on the system path. The problem was supposed to be resolved in the next release of autoconf but I'm not sure how to check the version or check if this is my problem.

I'm trying to get Drupal running so the mail() function is necessary. Any help, pointers, etc. are welcomed.
