Linux for a 66Mhz 486.

Recommended Posts

Hello. I've been googling around. I have been finding plenty of resources but they cover linux distros that seem to have died out. Now I am here asking for help.

PC specs:

Processor: 66Mhz 486

Memory: 35MB, yes 35MB. two 16MB sticks, but bios reports 35MB and diagnotics say it is all valid.

HDA: 1284MB

HDB: 1224MB

HDC: 4x CD-ROM

Video: Internal Cirrus Logic GD-54xx VGA. has 1MB RAM.

ISA expansion card: 1 free, 2 used.

Sound: Aztech Sound Galaxy Washington 16. on ISA expansion card. with joystick port. PC diagnotics detect it as a sound blaster and produces sound through it too. not needed though. audioable beeps through system speaker is enough.

NIC: 10Mbit, Unknown manufacturer. on ISA expansion card.

Modem: 56.6Kb built-in to MB, not used or needed.

ps/2: 2 connectors for mouse and keyboard.

serial: 1 port. not used or needed.

printer: 1 port. not used or needed.

Desired use:

IRC, web and FTP servers.

I need to be able to remotely admin the machine through telnet or ssh because a monitor will not be connected most of the time.

I am quite willing to spend as much time as it takes to get the system running. I am doing this partly to learn how linux works as an OS, partly to put this junker to work, and mainly to have fun. ;)

GUI is not needed, dunno if GUI would run on it anyways.

Anyone know of a linux distro still in existance that will run reasonably well on this machine?
