If I remember correctly, tmpfs is exactly what you want: an auto-resizable RAM disk. "none" should be mounted somewhere (eg: "/mnt/ram"), using driver "tmpfs". The more you add to your tmpfs drive, the more RAM you use; the more you delete from it, the less RAM you use; thus, an empty tmpfs mount point should use next to no RAM :) And I seem to remember, that there's a mount option for setting the maximum amount of RAM to be used by the "drive".
