Guest dieder
Hello, I have got a pc from my boss with Windows / XP , no floppy. I would like to install Linux and to boot from CD, because our ICT department does not support my pc any longer if I have changed the configuration. Unfortunately my company decided to choose for Microsoft , but I did not ! :deal: I have Partition magic, and have a 3 th partition available ( now NTFS but can be removed, reformatted) I have read here a topic on how to create such a image, but I have no linux running . ( seems to be the eg and chicken story), Please advise. Thanks.
Guest Hamanidaba
What about formatting you partition to hold your linux data and using a Live-Cd like Mandrake Move or Knoppix (a lot of current distro's offer this)? Then you can boot into and run Linux from the cd, save your data to your extra partition, and never have to install a linux OS on your hard drive to upset your IT department. Guest Hamanidaba
Oops, forgot to say - go to your favorite distro's web site and you should find instructions for downloading a live cd version and image (iso) then follw your cd burner software's instructions about burning a cd image. All software is a little different, but your manual should give good instructions, or go to their web site. Here is a link with some generic instruction: http://members.home.nl/lsnoek/iso.htm You can also purchase a commercial cd if you don't want to download it... Guest dieder
What about formatting you partition to hold your linux data and using a Live-Cd like Mandrake Move or Knoppix (a lot of current distro's offer this)?<{POST_SNAPBACK}> They don't mind what data I put on my pc as long as a do not change the boot, windows configuration and the first partition ( this is a copy of a standard partion image) Is this not limitted in features compared to a installation on a partition ? If yes, Also my CD is noisy so, I prefer to install linux on a partition. Is this possible: - I install Mandrake on the third partition. - I boot my pc with "Mandrake Move or Knoppix" as a intermediate step - I make a boot CD as described here.
